Something told the Wild Geese....

Something told the wild geese
It was time to go;
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered, - 'snow'.
Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries, luster-glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned, - 'frost'.

All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice,
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.

Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly -
Summer sun was on their wings,
Winter in their cry.

I thought of this poem this morning on my walk as hundreds of geese flew overhead. I just stood and was amazed.  Some had spent the night on the lake and after a very noisy discussion a number of geese would take off followed by more honking and more taking off.  By the time I finished my walk all the geese were gone.
Now it's raining and I plan on baking Chocolate chip cookies before putting a ham in the oven to bake for supper. That's my day. How about yours?

  2. I had a lot going on today, all fun but tiring!
    I'll rest on Friday!
I love the geese! They have been very loud here. I adore their fat bodies and their long black necks.
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. Enjoying a rest after work. Early tomorrow morning I'll bake a pumpkin pie. My daughter and her family can't come until supper, so I have plenty of time for making the rest of the meal. Hoping for a relaxing Thanksgiving evening with at least part of my family! :)
