A Short Get-Away

We went on a road trip with our camperized van to the Okanagan. We took back roads as much as possible ( some were gravel and very bumpy!!) but the scenery never failed to please me.  It is so different from where we are located in the Fraser Valley.  Look at that blue sky!!

Yes, that does say Avalanche area

There are a multitude of fruit and veg stands in the area where we went. We found lots of good deals and came home with around 60 lbs of peaches, about half as many lbs of nectarines and also apricots.
We paid between .30 and .75 a pound, depending on the  ripeness. We were looking for slightly over ripe ( and therefore cheaper).

We have our work cut out for us now as we choose which ones need to be done first. Most will end up in the freezer but I will be using my dehydrator as well.
We had a lovely place to stay for the night, right beside a river ( Picard Creek, for those who know the area). As seniors we pay only $^6 to stay.

This post was very heavy on photos so if you're still reading I'll be surprised.  Please leave a comment so I'll know you were here.

  2. That's great! I'm trying to recognize where you went, but the one with the red jeep certainly looks like McIntyre Bluff, just north of Oliver. Did you take that old Princeton-Summerland Rd? We'll be heading to Oliver sometime soon, need to get my peaches for the next year.

    1. Hi Karen, We took the Princeton-Summerland road alright. Once we left the asphat the gravel road was so rough things were being jostled around in the cupboards and a speaker cover fell right off. We were not so thrilled with that part. After we got our fruit and had camped for night, we took the road that goes through Coalmont and Tulameen and ends up at the 5A. We've driven that one before and that's where we spotted the deer and the bear and heard loons calling by some unnamed lake where we stopped for a cuppa. Really liked that.

  3. Meant to add that wow, you were lucky to see the bear! We did see a moose once up by Sunday summit. Very familiar with Pickard creek, we pass it every trip, although have never stayed there. Have stayed at Stemwinder just down the road, and Bromley Rock, a bit farther to the south, several times. Lucky guess on the P to S road, we have taken it once, a bit hairy because there had been snow that melted and we had rather bald tires, and spots were pretty greasy. We were glad to get back on the pavement. Was I right about McIntyre Bluff ?

    1. Great photos! I just bought a food dehydrater yesterday. I was surprised by how long it takes... can't wait to try it.

  5. A beautiful trip! Seeing the bear and the deer made it even more special. Sure glad there wasn't an avalanche while you were there! That many peaches sounds like a lot of work peeling but so delicious! Nancy

  6. I like "Avalanche Area-Don't Stop!" Maybe you'll make it before the next avalanche if you really hurry! :)
I've only seen one black bear in broad daylight in the 34 years I've been in Minnesota. And we have a lot of black bears! Great photos! Love the old log barn, too.
Enjoy the fruits and veggies! :)
