Christmas Cards

Do you receive a lot of Christmas cards?  I'm curious, what do you do with them after the holidays are over?  A lot of them are so pretty that I'm determined to find a craft to use them but not being very crafty it's a problem.

The nuns that taught me at school made lovely things using cards and wool with which they sort of sewed them into "boxes". There is a layer of clear plastic on both sides of the cards so they are quite sturdy.  Another thing they made with them were "chairs" with the seat that could be lifted and things stored inside. Those chairs were about ten inches tall. If ever I find one I'll be sure to buy it for a souvenir.  I'm glad I found this box although I haven't any idea what to keep in it.

Last year ( or maybe it was 2 years ago) I made some banners using the fronts only of cards I had kept. I still like them but need more ideas that are easy enough for a craft-challenged me.

I hope you're having a good day.  Thanks for visiting!

  1. I love the banner! The box is very pretty, but WAY too much work for lazy little me! :) I like to save the ones with nativity scenes on them, then I just set them around the house to remind me of the real reason for Christmas.

    1. I know. Much too much work but I guess the nuns had nothing better to do in the long evenings.

  2. I am not much help and it does seem a waste to just throw them away. I like your banner but the pretty box would be work and then I would have to find somewhere to set it and don't need anymore clever. It might be used for a gift box though? The only other thing I can think of it cut the picture off the front and glue to cardstock to remake Christmas cards for next year! Nancy

  3. I do save my cards. When I was working I would take them into school for my Helping Hands kids to make gift boxes. There are instructions here http://www.thinkmakeshareblog.com/wp-content/uploads/greetings_box_instructions.pdf . The kids made the little boxes and put chocolate kisses in them and distributed them to our cafeteria, custodial and clerical staff. If we had a lot of cards we would bring boxes to a local nursing home. They are pretty easy to make and there are lots of youtube videos for instruction. I agree with Lisa... your box is very pretty but too much work for me!!

  4. I save a few that might make good package tags but I throw the rest away. I do keep the many photo cards, put them on a ring, and save them with my Christmas things.

  5. I too save a few special cards. I haven't seen one of those boxes in years!

  6. I remember seeing those multi-sided balls made from cards. Bookmarks? Your house looks so cozy, GM.

  7. My daughter used to make those little gift boxes mentioned above. Cute, but rather small, good for jewellery or one or two chocolates. We don't receive or send many cards, so don't have the pile to deal with that some do. Generally they end up thrown away, although that might be a few years down the line.

  8. I love that little box and the banner you made. I have saved all the Christmas cards we have received for the last several years and have them in a box in the shop. I just might try making a banner like yours. I want to check out that website too. I would love to try making a box.
