The Pigeon and the Dog

Several years ago my son rescued a pigeon which he found lying in the parking area of the complex he manages. It probably hit a window and was stunned. He put it in a box and brought it home. When it recovered we realized first of all that it was quite tame and secondly that it wasn't a 'wild' pigeon but rather some special breed. Conveniently we had a lovely big bird cage and it has lived there ever since. As you can see it doesn't mind being handled and my grandson has fun with her.( as much fun as you can have with a bird!)
Oh yes, we found out it is a her because last year she started laying eggs.

Incidentally, my GS's face is purposely cut off because my DIL prefers that the grands not be clearly pictured  on my blog. But at least you can see his adorable smile!!

DH is the one who most often fills the bird's food dish and maybe that's why she follows him around. Here she is sitting on his drill while he's fixing the picnic table.

This rascal is a big problem because the bird likes him and insists on getting way too close. We've been unsuccessful in getting the dog to stop trying to "catch" her and unwittingly ( or maybe not) injure her. So far we've kept her safe and hopefully we can keep it that way. Never a dull moment around here.

Thanks for visiting today.

  2. Oh, cool post about your pets! The dog is, after all, a bird dog....:)
Our black lab used to be overly interested in the chickens, but we did manage to train her to leave them alone.

    1. Any pointers on how to get our dog to leave the bird alone? We've tried praising him when he just looks but in the next moment he's at her again.

  8. Reading your story about the pigeon triggered a memory for me from when I was perhaps 11 years old. Similar story, a pigeon hit the window and was injured and Dad caved in after I begged and begged to keep it as a pet. Unfortunately, it never recovered from its injuries but for that week that it lived, I thought of myself as Florence Nightingale :) Thanks for the flashback!

  9. So it looks like the pigeon has the run of the place. Does she just stay in the cage at night? I suppose it's the safest place with a bird dog about the place, lol. It's looking very springlike out your way!

    1. No, we only let the pigeon out of her cage when we're outside to watch over her. She has no fear of dogs, obviously, and besides ours the neighbours have 2 big ones.

  10. That is neat that you have a pet pigeon and she is so tame. That would be scary trying to keep the dog away from the pigeon especially since the pigeon likes the dog! Too bad you couldn't train them to be best friends!! Nancy
