Rhubarb and Lilacs

One of the joys of spring is rhubarb. Last fall we were given this plant and since it was so recently transplanted I didn't think we'd be able to harvest any this year. However, it seems to be doing well except I've already had to cut out two of these ugly seed heads.
In any case, today DH brought in 5 nice stalks and I had taken out a container of frozen strawberries so we had strawberry rhubarb crisp for dessert at supper.

We needed bread so since I had the oven on I also put the breadmaker to good use. The loaf on the left is just an ordinary loaf but the rather lumpy one on the right was an experiment. I took half the dough and tried to knead in raisins and cinnamon.  I'm looking forward to having it toasted for breakfasts this week.

Do you love lilacs? I do and I wish they bloomed all summer instead of a few short weeks in spring.

Happy Tuesday and I hope the sun is shining for you.  Thanks for visiting!

  1. I love lilacs, the smell is a real delight. I have just picked some rhubarb, the first of the season and am going to make a pie. Take care.

  2. Hi Granny Marigold--I am trying one of the "re-blooming" lilacs. I just bought it last summer-it's kind of "dinky" right now, but it will be neat to see if it does indeed keep blooming through summer. Lilacs are so wonderful.

    1. Hi Sue, Would that by any chance be "Bloomerang"? My DIL has that one and although the flowers are tiny there are lots of them and it does sort of have a second time of blooming.

  6. Lilacs are heavenly! We don't have any here,(but should) but some overhang from the neighbours at Oliver. They are blooming all over the place there, or will be shortly.
I have just transplanted my rhubarb. I think where I had it, it just got too wet in the winter. It did well at first, but then just went downhill. So we will see how it does in the new spot. I have read that the first year you shouldn't harvest any of your rhubarb, I don't know with yours if this would be considered the first year or not. I'd say just go easy on it, leave lots of stalks to feed the roots. I haven't had a whole lot of success with rhubarb. The couch grass gets into it, and grows right through the rhubarb roots.

YES! I love lilacs and I saw some hanging over a fence the other day. I must go back and cut some.
