Summer

We celebrated the first day of summer by going blueberry picking first thing this morning. DH and I picked these three pails in less than an hour and paid $15 which works out to a dollar a pound.
Did not know that I should leave these at room temperature for a day or two and they actually get sweeter.  Why has no one ever told me before?  Because these have not been sprayed, this year I'm not even going to wash them before freezing. After all, I ate plenty of them while I was picking and didn't worry about a bit of dust/ This field is far from the road and probably doesn't get much dust anyway.

Another little fact.... this year the summer solstice coincides with the full moon. This apparently is not common and hasn't happened since 1948.

Happy First Day of Summer.    Thanks for visiting.

  1. Boy, I'd sure like to dive into a pail of those blueberries. Always wanted to see if a person turns blue from eating too many!!

  4. Blueberries are so early this year. That is a very good price, even for U-pick berries.
    Happy Solstice!

  5. I was born in May of 1948 near a full moon, must be kismet having a wonderful day, not like the heat of Arizona and California burning like hell it was said on PBS newshour..My hubs a little up and down and I just roll with it, always something after 65 years of age, I am 68 just turned married 42 years and hubs will be 69 in late October, retirement and aging is not for the faint of heart, one has to have lots of guts and glory to survive, hubs forced to retire early, that is the way of the USA they don't want men to work past 65 or 66 at all most get the boot at 50ish and they are so experienced it is worse for women who must look much younger, I say b.s. to all of it, we are okay, we live simply and happily and I cannot be upset as my Mom died when she was in her late 30's and my grandmother her very late 80's now my aunt my mothers only sibling is nearing 100 one cannot predict anything I say be happy today, tomorrow is never guaranteed and yesterday is gone, love blueberries and pick them on a farm for free to get them done picking, we freeze them and I make jams and compote and pies..happy summer day to YOU!

  6. I didn't know about letting the blueberries sit and they would get sweeter. But then we buy them in lugs from the market now so they probably have already sat! Nancy

  8. Your blueberries look delicious! I didn't know you should leave them out for a day either. Good to know. We won't have blueberries here for another few weeks.
    Have a good week.
