This and That

Thunderstorms are somewhat unusual around here but last night we had one and my but was it loud. Every time there was a flash of lightning the rain fell even harder and I lay in bed wondering what damage my flowers would sustain. Had the storm been forecast I would at least have pulled the pots of Petunias under cover.  Well, nothing was ruined and IF we get some sunny days I think most everything will pull itself up again. Unfortunately the weather forecast is not terribly promising.

While taking stock of how badly things were beaten down I realized that certain plants had become quite overgrown and today youngest son came to dig out the worst thugs. Spiderwort was the first to go. From an 8" pot a few years ago it had spread to a good 3 feet in diameter and was sprawling over.
Next he dealt with a grass that was supposed to look so great but never did. Can't remember what it was called but I am keeping only one grass and that is a gold-barred one that grows about 4 feet high and actually looks nice.
Next to go were 2 large patches of Lysymachia ( not sure about the spelling). It had mostly reverted from variegated to solid green and didn't look nice any more.  You get the idea. Anyway, I hope to keep things a little more under control now.

In the kitchen this week I tried to use up bits of this and that in the fridge.  Half a container of cottage cheese, a cup of sour cream and an 8 oz box of cream cheese plus another half box... ended up as a cheesecake.  I tried to make a blueberry glaze but I think there was too much glaze and not enough berries. Oh well. It tasted great. Also had a cup pf cherry pie filling leftover. Used most of that.

Also in the fridge was milk that was needing to be used. I should have doubled the recipe but didn't think of it. Now we have baked custards and still more milk to find a use for. That's cinnamon on top not the usual nutmeg that egg custard calls for. I'm not a big fan of nutmeg.

Well, this post certainly turned out to be lengthy. I thought I had very little to say but apparently once I get going.....

Thanks for visiting today.

  1. I haven't pulled out much, but I certainly have cut back a lot in the garden. We were just looking this evening at what we need to change for next year.

  2. I always freeze extra milk in 1 cup portions to use in recipes. We never actually "drink" milk--it's always for recipes and this way I only have to buy it once a month or so.

    1. I did try that at one time but found that I tend to decide to bake something NOW and don't want to wait for the milk to thaw. Maybe I'll have to try again.

  3. Our garden really does need a good sort out. Such a good idea to make good use of the food needing using from the fridge. Those bakes custards look delicious.

  5. It always seems to happen we get thunderstorms and winds just when the garden is looking it's best. I hope your garden recovers!
Your cheesecake looks delicious. I found some apples lurking in the fridge so made a pie today.
    Have a great week.

  6. We finally got some much needed rain too... my flowers are singing! I "hoed out" the overgrown plants last year and also hope to keep a better handle on things now. I don't care how much glaze was on that blueberry cheesecake... it looks delicious! Have a good week!

  9. You did a great job of using up your leftovers! Glad your storm did no real damage. What worries me is when they forecast there may be hail and high winds. Nancy

  10. I am even farther behind on blogging now as that thunderstorm killed our computer and modem (despite being plugged into a good surge protector). Shaw replaced the modem, but no computer yet. Have to make do with my pathetic little phone for now:-( And wow, that was one scary storm!)

    1. Oh no! What bad luck you had in spite of the surge protector. I did wonder why you hadn't posted for a while but figured you just were too busy. Hope you get a proper computer soon.
