Amaryllis

I have never grown an Amaryllis but have wanted to. They always seem to be quite expensive, especially since most people don't have luck getting them to rebloom.  Today I was browsing in Walmart when I saw that the Amaryllis were marked down to $4. I checked the boxes ( there were a number of them) and found one where the bulb had just begun to grow. So I bought it.  Walked over to Home Depot afterwards and lo and behold they had theirs marked down to a dollar but they had long stems already. Bought one anyway. For a dollar I'll take the chance/ There was also a little pink Cyclamen in a 4" pot for a dollar. It came home with me too.  I hope all will thrive providing some much needed blooms while I wait for Spring.

In the picture below you can see what my back yard looks like at this point.

Besides gallivanting around Walmart and Home Depot I did manage to get both Christmas trees un-decorated and everything in boxes. I'll deal with those tomorrow.

Thanks for popping by,

  1. We bought an amaryllis on sale too and Tom is getting it growing in the greenhouse, since they get so long and lanky in the house.
Our yard looks like that too.

  2. Like you, I bought an Amaryllis today as well to keep company with the other one I bought last week as they were now marked down to 2.44 at SuperStore. Too bad one can only find limited varieties in Canada while you can get other colors in the US. Hope yours do well.

    1. Have you had any luck getting them to re-bloom?

    2. Yes, one year I did but it was my first time ever and after that, not so much...beginner's luck? But now that I have 3 planted (Red Lion, Apple Blossom, and Minerva), I hope to try again. Plus I planted the Amaryllis seeds that I bought on Amazon but that could take 4 years to see a bloom IF I can even get them to germinate. Hope springs eternal, especially when it's -30C with windchill. Maybe your American readers know where one can get other colors?

  3. What great mark down prices, worth having a go at growing them at those prices. Thankfully we still have no snow yet. Have a great weekend.

  4. Every year for Christmas my parents bought each one of us kids an amaryllis. My Mum continued on for a few years after my Dad died but it has been four or five years since I've had one now. They are lovely and it is always interesting to see how many flowers you will have.
    Enjoy!

    1. I'll ask you the same question as above. Have you had any luck getting one to re-bloom?

  5. The amaryllis are a great idea, especially when you display them with that background! We used to buy them for my father-in-law and he took great joy in watching them grow fast. They are great when you have no garden at all. I think I would like one.... but I have so little light in the house, I struggle with the few houseplants that I collect from gifts.

This year I did buy several poinsettias and I think they will continue to brighten up my indoor space, if I can keep them going in the relative dimness.

And I have some cyclamen blooming in the otherwise brown garden! God bless you and your horticultural efforts in 2017!

  11. That looks like a nice way to garden until it's time to get back outside. My sister sends me an amaryllis every year for Christmas. I enjoy watching them grow inside. Here we can plant them outside and see them re-bloom the following year. After a few years they seem to stop blooming. Perhaps I need to investigate fertilizing them.
