Garlic Scapes and Roses

DH grows a patch of Garlic and last year he cut off the scapes and I looked up how to prepare them. Apparently I should sautee them, which I did. We weren't impressed,  so this year we decided to try different ways to eat them. I made a pot of lentil soup and threw some chopped up scapes in it. They hold their shape ( looking like cut up green beans) and made the soup extra tasty. So we are going to cut these up and freeze them for future use.

About 30 years ago we planted a Queen Elizabeth Tea Rose in our front flowerbed. Every year it got Black Spot and lost all its leaves. It did continue to bloom though so we moved it way back in the back area where the compost bins are thinking it probably wouldn't survive. Well, it did, and every year it provides us with these lovelies!  ( It still has next to no leaves though, and by now is probably 12 feet tall. DH has a bit of a problem getting at the blooms!!)

We're having a second cooler day in a row. I got some baking done yesterday not knowing how long the cool would last. So today I think I'll deal with some housework.

Thanks for visiting,

  1. We brought garlic scapes back from Oliver, and sold some at the market. We have a bed of garlic there and one here. I'll be cutting, well snapping off, the ones here for this weekend. We just use them sliced thinly in anything that we would normally add, or could add, garlic to.

  2. Garlic scrapes?

    Oh what amazingly beautiful roses!

Equally amazing, that it produces such, but not much in the way of leaves. Perhaps all the 'energy' goes into growing tall and producing lovely blooms? :-)

  3. It sounds like you're making good use of those garlic scapes. I imagine a lot of people throw them away, but what a shame!
The roses are gorgeous in that vase, even though the plant may not look so great. Everything gets a second chance at your place! :)

  4. Not a fan of garlic, so no scapes for me. But we do have the Queen Elizabeth rose. We moved it a couple of years ago, the roots pretty much hacked, and it is thriving. That rose is a survivor.

  6. That is such a beautiful vase of roses! Every rose (except for the Knock-out rose) I try to grow gets black spot and by July all the leaves are ugly and falling off. I did not know what garlic scapes are. Glad you had a picture.

  7. I have had horrible luck growing roses. My husband gave me a yellow rose bush many years ago, it only bloomed once and this year it didn't make it through the winter. :-(
