More This and That

I'm trying to blog more faithfully but not much is happening so I have to resort to trivia. Which may bore you...just saying.

My dear GD Kate gave me this Mary Englebreit calendar for Christmas. It has nice big squares so I have it hanging by the phone so I can write all birthdays, anniversaries, and appointments on it.

I picked up this Snakes and Ladders board at the thrift store. It's thick and heavy and ever so colourful. GS M and I have been playing that game often since I got it. I didn't even think to turn it over before I got it home but then I saw that there was  Parcheesi   on the other side.

I can't remember all the rules but we manage just fine. For our markers we use chocolate chips. Big ones for him and smaller ones for me. When the game is done he eats them.

Besides playing games with M I've been doing some organizing in my Buttery. I love my old canisters even if they don't match. Maybe even more because of that.

We call this little room a Buttery because before my DH added it to the house we already had a cupboard we called a pantry.  Since we couldn't have 2 pantries  and not be confused - we needed another term. Apparently in old times a buttery was a store room for bottles of ale and wine. The person who presided over the buttery was called the Butler.  Years ago my buttery held  not bottles of ale but rather quarts of canned fruit etc.. but now that I no longer can it just serves as a storage room.
The ugly view of the neighbour's 15 foot fence is partially blocked by the stained glass window that hangs in front of the old wood window which we probably picked up beside the road at some time or other.  ( Am I the only one who cries STOP THE TRUCK!  I SEE A FREE SIGN BY THAT....)

That, my friends, is my trivia for the day  .Have a lovely Sunday. The sky was all rosy and peach coloured this evening so that assures us of a clear day which is very welcome.

  1. I love the term buttery... you learn something new every day! The stained glass is beautiful. I bet it is really pretty when the sun shines through it. I love your trivia post!

    1. Thanks Debi! You'r right about the sun shining through that window. It faces east and the morning sun just lights up the room. ( But not so much in winter when sunny days are rare.)

  2. The sky this evening was just stunning!! It made my eyes moist, the beauty of it! Looking forward to some sunshine tomorrow. Back in the day, a friend and I used to drive around when they had their cleanup week in Surrey, and people put out all sorts of fascinating stuff to give away or eventually be picked up by the garbage trucks. We got some amazing stuff..... And yes, I perk right up at those free signs!
Snakes and Ladders used to be a favourite game for me as a child. I like your old canisters, I have a few myself that I haven't found a use for yet. We don't have much these days that would go in a canister. I thought I could use them in my sewing room, which is where they are right now, but there is nothing in them.

  3. You’re doing far better than I am with my blogging. I love Mary Englebreit, but haven’t seen anything of hers for years. Love the stain glass window, what a brilliant find that was xx

  4. I think the mismatched canisters are charming. Like Karen, I love the old canisters, but could never think of anything to put in them. Mine were usually a little rusty, so I didn't want to put food in them. Anyway, they are a cute decoration and could hold some other things. The game board is such a great find! I've bought games for my grands recently and they are all so lightweight and cheaply made. Yours is fantastic! I would have thought the buttery was where the dairy products were kept cool. Thanks for educating me! The calendar is really cute. Don't apologize for your "trivial" post. All of life is made up of little things, and the little things can be such a blessing! :)

    1. Some of my old canisters have a bit of rust in the bottom but I line them with parchment paper and also put the lentils or choc. chips whatever I bought
( usually in the bulk section) I leave them in their plastic bags.

  5. I did smile at using chocolate as counters and then eating them, my own Grandchildren would love that idea. I loved the canisters and the tern buttery.

  8. Oh gosh, I haven't played Parcheesi in a long, long time. You were smart to use chocolate chips as markers.

I adore your canisters. My daughter bought a set similar to yours, but hers do match. I really like your Buttery and the stained glass window. What a lovely touch.

  9. Oh, it sounds so homey to have enough pantries to call one a buttery!

  10. Pretty pictures. I often wondered where the word "buttery" came from, thanks for posting this. Love that stained glass window. Chris

  12. I just love Mary Engelbreit's art. It's so happy. And I must remember to use chocolate chips when I play with my grandkids some day - what a great idea! Your canisters are perfect, I think - they do match, with their red lids, very similar, but not matchy-matchy. Just pefect :)
