New Houses

A number of very big houses have been built in our neighbourhood recently.
The style of this one doesn't do anything for me. It looks a bit like an institution.

I like this one more.  Notice how it dwarfs the house next door.

This one is just around the corner from our house. No lawn to cut here!

This is the one being built right next to us ( that's our house to the left).
I think the end result will be very much like the first picture. Too bad since we'll be looking at it every time we go outside.

In an effort to distract my eyes from the view I've hung a number of Christmas ornament type balls over my desk in the sunroom.

The neighbourhood is changing. Many of the people who lived on our street have moved into townhouses or assisted living type places. The closeness that existed is gone.  People leave for work early and are gone all day. I suppose it was inevitable that things would change, after all it has been over 40 years since my DH built this place.

Thanks for coming by today.
An answer to a comment that Rose left about how I'm doing after my fall.   I'm almost totally healed, just a bit of tenderness on one leg. Thanks for asking.

  1. At some point I'll have to post an update on the two big houses going in next to us. They are ugly too.

  2. I am glad you are almost healed...it is not fun to fall at our age.

Those house that you said do nothing for you? They don't me either...just look too much like a business...have a cold feel to them. But whoever likes them probably would hate what I like.

  3. I'm not crazy about that first one either. They all seem too big on for the land they are built on.

  4. It is disheartening to see houses like yours get dwarfed by the tall and wide new houses. It does seem as though they should build houses that are more proportionate to the lot...? A friend of mine has a one-story house on a nice, deep lot, on a country road. In the last few years huge houses have been built on either side of her, blocking out the sun and changing the atmosphere drastically.

  5. So many different styles in such a small area.
My husband is a builder, specializes in the interior trim work, homes around us are changing, a lot of modern stuff coming in I'm not real keen on it myself but it has become popular.
Neighborhoods are so empty now with both choosing to work outside of the home. Sad actually.

    Have a beautiful evening~

  6. It's just my opinion, but it seems like the new houses are too large for the lot and too close to the houses that are already there. It looks like you could almost reach out your window and touch the new house going up next to you.

The houses in our neighborhood are close together, but not usually that close, unless someone sneaked something over on the building codes inspectors and added a garage to their home, making it too close to the house next to it. The homes in our little old subdivision are 65 years old and most of them are very similar looking to each other, small homes on small lots. To post World War II families facing housing shortages they felt like dreams come true.

Your hanging ornaments look very pretty.

  7. I like your ornaments hanging near your window. My neighborhood has lots of monster houses going in, I think they look the size of hotels. You wonder how many people will live in them, sometimes two people. And all that cement around that one in your post, not good for our planet.

  8. The neighborhood where our community hospice is located in is very vintage. Homes that are grand along with some bungalows but all are on large lots and the trees are huge. Now there is a movement to buy houses and tear them down and unfortunately, the new builds don't always fit in to the old style feel of the original homes. I wish they had put in controls so the new builds had to match the style. I like the 2nd house in. That one is lovely!

    Glad you're feeling better!!

  9. I don't understand why people keep building bigger and bigger. I enjoy a small home where I can get my work done and spend time outside or just enjoying the things I love. Bigger means higher payments, higher insurance, higher utility bills and more space to keep clean . . . give me a small cozy home any day.
I want you to know that we are both very grateful for your prayers. It means so very much and touches our hearts with love, thank you.
    Happy Easter.

  10. I have watched my communities both at work and at home denigrate. It is the hardest thing for me. I feel too old to start over. But I feel that there is no other choice.

  11. Some of those houses look very European, or like something you'd see in Japan. Yes, it's too bad they can build so large that they block out the neighbor's sunlight. Hopefully your neighbor will choose attractive siding and maybe you can grow some tall flowers or trees along your fence?

  12. It's so sad that the new housing trend leans toward austere and sterile. Another sad fact is that though people build such large houses, few people open their homes anymore to have friends over for coffee or tea. Hospitality in one's home seems a thing of the past.
