First Day of Summer!

I found this on the internet and thought it was interesting:

I always found it strange that the day which marks the beginning of the season of summer is called "mid-summer", which I understand would mean "middle of summer". While midsummer is on the summer solstice (June 20–21), the actual middle of summer would be about August 6, no?

No matter why it is called what it is , I'm just happy that it's here!

I hope you have a very special day!   G.M.

  3. I think Summer in Kansas started a few weeks ago with all our 80° and 90° weather... and now we're bordering on 100° this week and next. Bleah. But I do love summer... I get to spend more time with the grandkids, and Jerry and I can go fishing more often! Happy first day of Summer to you, G.M.! ♥

  4. I've never thought about that before. Good question! It's definitely NOT the middle of the summer. But maybe it's because the summer solstice is kind of the "middle" day between the spring and fall equinoxes?

  5. If you were in a village in Sweden you would be dancing around the May pole on Midsummer's Eve. They don't have flowers yet on May Day. :-)

  6. I find it surprising to have dark skies and rain and wind today. Feels more like Autumn to me. I am sure the summer weather will arrive and then we will wish for cooler days. Have yourself a good weekend.

  7. That is funny how it was named. Does make sense that mid-summer should be Aug 6th, because that is really the "dog days of summer" when we are in the middle extreme of the season. Oh well, I'm sure they had a reason for putting it where it is, but maybe I'll never know! Phil

  9. I had never heard that about "mid-summer". That is odd. Your flowers in the last two posts are simply beautiful! I have tried and tried to grow Lavender and it will not live.
