A Bird and a Bat

As I was about to leave on my morning walk I noticed this little Chickadee on the front walk. I knew that there had been a Chickadee nest in one of the front birdhouses and now the time had come for the babies to fledge. Guess this little one was reluctant to try out his wings. Just look at its sour expression in the second photo.  ( photo taken by my DIL)

Yesterday we had a baby bat in the back yard. He didn't seem to be doing very well.  M was intrigued by it and spent a lot of time watching it and hoping it would be okay. Unfortunately it wasn't. It did manage to crawl up a wall and hang upside down for a while but later on it died.

We didn't even  know we had bats around.  Now we're wondering if they live in the attic of the playhouse in the back.

So that's been the excitement of this week so far. Who knows what tomorrow will bring?

  2. Little chickadee indeed looks a bit sour. We have so many chickadees all the time in the kids' yards. I love them so much and enjoy watching them throughout the year. Poor lil bat, perhaps he was a bit sick. We've seen that happen in the past.

  3. What a very bad tempered look on that little bird's face!

  4. Critters, love em anyway. Love that expression why he's pouting.! Bats are rather funny looking, never seen one up close like that. We've got deer, lots and lots of deer here in suburbia. Now if I were a deer, I would be running about in the forest away from people and cars. Love them babies with the spots... I wish they didn't like my tomatoe flowers though.

    Too bad about the bat.

  7. Love the expression on that bird's face! What a shame the bat died; I imagine it would be quite awesome to have a small colony living near you. But, then, I have only seen bats once so I guess I feel a bit romantic about them - no doubt they would have their down side as well :)

  8. I love the look on the chickadee's face. I've felt that way sometimes. Bats freak me out. I know they eat insects and all but still...

  9. That little bird looks like he's angry that someone pushed him out of the nest. :-). Poor little bat. We have lots of them here at the lake and at dusk they begin swooping and diving all around but they've never bothered us one little bit. They're still a bit eerie to me though.

  10. That chickadee does look like it is mad at the world....wonderful shots. And the poor little bat....I hope it had just lived to a ripe old age and was not suffering too bad.

  11. Ha! Love the Chickadee's face. What a cutie! Bats are strange to me, but they serve a great purpose on our farm. Sad that this one died.

  12. That little chickadee's expression is funny and I like it's little feathers sticking out.
How weird to have that bat appear when you weren't aware there were any around you. Poor guy!

  14. Poor little bird. I do hope it was able to lift up its little wings and fly away. We used to see lots of bats around here when we were kids, but they seem to be rather scarce these days. And,just when I had almost given up on seeing owls again, one evening when I went walking late with Millie, we heard a rustling about in the trees just above our heads, and there one was...looking down right at us.

  15. What a sweet little chickadee. Hope he managed to fly away. Poor little bat. I'm afraid of them but feel sorry for all the little helpless animals. For us here, it's been hawks mostly. :)

  17. Poor bat, such a shame. Hopefully the chickadee was OK.

  18. Can't say I'm too fond of bats as we see them flying here at times. The expression on your little chickadee reminds me of the children's book called "Nope" by Drew Sheneman - if you haven't already seen this book, it's definitely worth ordering it from your local library - about a determined little chick that won't leave the nest. I bought a copy for myself just recently. Hilarious!

  19. I've heard that bats eat LOTS of mosquitoes, so if you have them, it might be a blessing.

  20. Sorry to hear about the bat. I had one in the house last week, but was able to put a towel over it and take it outside, where it flew away. I usually get at least one or two each year.
