We saw an otter and loads of small birds but one that we didn't see was the pileated woodpecker. We've been noticing small brownish moths mostly in the kitchen. I'm fairly sure they are Pantry Moths also known as Meal Moths. They look for cereal or other dry food and lay their eggs. The larva are destructive and foul the foods that they hatch in so we're trying to get rid of them. I read that they don't like the scent of lavender so that's why I have been putting drops of lavender essential oils in various places. Anyone else had a problem with them? seen in North America in over a century!</p><p>At exactly 11:06 p.m. EDT
on March 19, 2024, the Sun crosses the celestial equator from south to

also remarkable, as it is the earliest vernal equinox in 128 years.</p>Thanks for coming by, GM<br /><p></p>Granny Marigoldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15858237999602347848noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580372117701042127.post-76099788160076114012024-03-18T09:13:00.000-07:002024-03-18T09:13:40.844-07:00Monday Chit Chat<p style="text-align: center;"><b> Happy Monday! From the sun room I got a couple of pictures that are not very good at all but give a small idea of what's going on. That big green boom is part of the pump pumping endless amounts of concrete into the forms that have been erected over months In the second picture you can see the hospital which is very nearby. I'm very low on icing sugar and when I did the shopping I saw the price was almost twice what I paid last time so I didn't buy any. The internet tells me I can put regular sugar in the blender and get it fine enough to be used as icing sugar, In spite of my efforts the sugar didn't get to the same texture and the icing I made is a little gritty. I'm sure no one will complain :)</p><p>It's been a quiet week. All the usual things got done in the house and outside a little more power washing got done. We're all waiting for warm sunshine to do more. I thought of transplanting the Primroses into the ground....the ones that I bought about a month ago. After having them in the house I moved them to the unheated porch where they wait for the nights to stop dipping below freezing.</p><p>I hope you're having a pleasant weekend. Youngest son came to do some much-needed power washing. I walked around and looked at my flower beds but not much is happening so far. The crocuses that are blooming are much smaller than they've been other years and the hellebores are looking very sparse. We didn't have a severe winter so I'm not sure why. <br />On the subject of weather I was reading about how earth just experienced its hottest 12 months in recorded history. January has already broken temperature records, starting 2024 on-course to break global records set in 2023. Makes one wonder what kind of summer we're going to have. Drought has been a problem these last years.<p></p><p>Tomorrow the Snow Moon will be shining in all her beauty. After today our forecast is for a solid week of rain/showers so chances of seeing the moon are not good. I did see it through a skylight last night and it was already 99% full.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_weynCdrKmC9hzS32m9gZOYzG5K4rYBEE18BPMrv9plgV-6BabUtDUjfcxvB60JMshX0GADAm_9dIrqCnmCVjPCPVbRJCY0kAH7ioE3TPIIpTFx6afZmlW0xVuI3ZSL0IdeqyAk5ToLLXNAOSCXZ2nHEsF9UcQP-sUZVbRNuhc4RkbswxrmJQjhTHXQ/s4608/IMG_2532.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4608" data-original-width="3456" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_weynCdrKmC9hzS32m9gZOYzG5K4rYBEE18BPMrv9plgV-6BabUtDUjfcxvB60JMshX0GADAm_9dIrqCnmCVjPCPVbRJCY0kAH7ioE3TPIIpTFx6afZmlW0xVuI3ZSL0IdeqyAk5ToLLXNAOSCXZ2nHEsF9UcQP-sUZVbRNuhc4RkbswxrmJQjhTHXQ/w300-h400/IMG_2532.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Lovely orchid from one of my sons.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Thanks for visiting, GM<br /></div>Granny Marigoldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15858237999602347848noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7580372117701042127.post-52591239716651433162024-02-20T10:56:00.000-08:002024-02-20T10:56:07.870-08:00Looking for Spring<p> </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggfsGyCXg8pqVV3k0hALjqww3lW11t5jtBUrDXbEKfYNKiaZZoN4S87-KFDKYrOoKUVlzw8OyDZW1peyJe7_zabImKgEgaBSWifpMdKCX4QDRdKnd0YDnhjzOcCnJOAjLqLMRDnj83PehMzZiz5QTViEq-GDR3NU_GnRrLx8bvNOFUadSqK4FBtg-u3w/s433/6f79c8a01eb42d2855e6c6ce91caf2d3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="433" data-original-width="236" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggfsGyCXg8pqVV3k0hALjqww3lW11t5jtBUrDXbEKfYNKiaZZoN4S87-KFDKYrOoKUVlzw8OyDZW1peyJe7_zabImKgEgaBSWifpMdKCX4QDRdKnd0YDnhjzOcCnJOAjLqLMRDnj83PehMzZiz5QTViEq-GDR3NU_GnRrLx8bvNOFUadSqK4FBtg-u3w/w217-h400/6f79c8a01eb42d2855e6c6ce91caf2d3.jpg" width="217" /></a></div><br /> Gradually our weather seems to be warming up. The frilly one is A. Nymph and the other is A. Terrra Cotta.<br /> The other seven are showing no sign of blooming, in fact 3 of those look like they are going dormant. We didn't plan anything else for after our walk because some of our children were coming to unload a load of mushroom compost which I'm planning on spreading about on perennials just showing new growth. Some did get spread under the roses and the raised box got topped up. The remainder was stockpiled. Getting ready for Spring! Sunrise was at 7:29 but we didn't see it because it was so cloudy. Day length today 8 hrs 47 minutes.<br /><br />There were 7 swans on the Mill Lake three of which were youngsters still in their gray stage. I'm looking forward to the weekend when we'll try to see the 50 or so swans that have been seen at <br />Will band.</p><p>I'm trying to make my grocery list this morning. The on-line sale flyers are available on Wednesday (but the sales only begin Thursday). In any case I didn't see much to give me ideas what we will eat next week. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has that problem. As I've mentioned before the problem of meal-making is compounded by the fact that I am 98% vegetarian and my husband is not. Plus, I am a super fussy eater. <br /></p><p>My flowers this week are Primroses. I put them out on the porch for night hoping to keep them looking pretty for as long as possible.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Ln5WDXa6Tk-zx3j1J8PhuUVQQwrXN3QdDTCFt99o2nd4ax5L0CdJc13lpl1ulcIMfPeEH0UVfX1NwEXgiAwEhI7q0982t32CwzcV9_DeRsKcRsTjTyHLTpWcT8Zt5MmbNl46lvtiH_xIzAVCDVx9zomAc_-5rVvk7dInbJQuL-DgFBpiyMGZCEQM4w/s4608/IMG_2468.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh0Ln5WDXa6Tk-zx3j1J8PhuUVQQwrXN3QdDTCFt99o2nd4ax5L0CdJc13lpl1ulcIMfPeEH0UVfX1NwEXgiAwEhI7q0982t32CwzcV9_DeRsKcRsTjTyHLTpWcT8Zt5MmbNl46lvtiH_xIzAVCDVx9zomAc_-5rVvk7dInbJQuL-DgFBpiyMGZCEQM4w/w400-h300/IMG_2468.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo5zOX1MCJjJhyphenhyphenSDWkCrmlix7f54auA_Y7TyriLLmfiCn3zYMBBqihfxOjejfsKII3FL_TeOsnW5lnDACFhGCzTyK-yZFX-8yDuCJ-htcZoVnbYQa75xnyiQcBH7GMig729v1I1AYBbeJEv27M2tzO6uWZAcyhbZv9n6Y0JSqP5K-02BKn2MouXIDW_w/s4608/IMG_2467.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo5zOX1MCJjJhyphenhyphenSDWkCrmlix7f54auA_Y7TyriLLmfiCn3zYMBBqihfxOjejfsKII3FL_TeOsnW5lnDACFhGCzTyK-yZFX-8yDuCJ-htcZoVnbYQa75xnyiQcBH7GMig729v1I1AYBbeJEv27M2tzO6uWZAcyhbZv9n6Y0JSqP5K-02BKn2MouXIDW_w/w400-h300/IMG_2467.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>Not much else to write about today. That happened yesterday when I was paging through the January 1990 issue and came upon an article about Joanna Reed. There's a picture of her and I noticed that she was quite elderly which made me realize that she would have passed away years ago. Nevertheless, the article was about her life and how she tended her beautiful four season garden. She had a vision of creating four crewel curtain-panels for her livingroom each one depicting the splendours of a different season. She worked free hand, inventing as she went, shaping flowers , holding up her woolen yarns to match their colours.</p><p>She must have succeeded in finishing all four panels because the article states that two thousand devoted gardeners make the pilgrimage to Malvern, Pennsylvania in the course of a year's time to see her garden and also her four-season masterpiece. I couldn't find much on the internet about her. There seem to be many other women with the same name. I tried to get a few pictures of her work from the magazine. <br />The detail here is from her first panel, winter.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUI3V265lqFwOTx4qCYIQhqcsWIf6Ei2GraTtE17rr_bsRpW67Q0yWUytSww_GraC7BVgy26pVS8rIXqxhdgaOG7NxVZSQTa8214a7H3koCZ4GwhWu3ReD7xlqgrQAYxVbYWMCdpk7xZjVxuujYmQKHGgRmeaC0vKYqD4Vx1O437z-y3ygmdzjqOOE0g/s4608/IMG_2483.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUI3V265lqFwOTx4qCYIQhqcsWIf6Ei2GraTtE17rr_bsRpW67Q0yWUytSww_GraC7BVgy26pVS8rIXqxhdgaOG7NxVZSQTa8214a7H3koCZ4GwhWu3ReD7xlqgrQAYxVbYWMCdpk7xZjVxuujYmQKHGgRmeaC0vKYqD4Vx1O437z-y3ygmdzjqOOE0g/w400-h300/IMG_2483.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPJwVo_Kw_E7974c_oPCN83vf4KQLYZa2XzwtGmzt4OFQXn8UkJQ-LZp_wqw76TlQUU-gCd2ibW3TEncRvQlOBX8b69OHt-0hjNbZdb8JWSxcBVVRiGXN6MVW3PveNLH0smfhazHkPbVUST6YzpWCJfBI2aGdPixDzVqDGZHCv8GPw1_gjE0ksiLdw7Q/s4608/IMG_2485.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4608" data-original-width="3456" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPJwVo_Kw_E7974c_oPCN83vf4KQLYZa2XzwtGmzt4OFQXn8UkJQ-LZp_wqw76TlQUU-gCd2ibW3TEncRvQlOBX8b69OHt-0hjNbZdb8JWSxcBVVRiGXN6MVW3PveNLH0smfhazHkPbVUST6YzpWCJfBI2aGdPixDzVqDGZHCv8GPw1_gjE0ksiLdw7Q/w300-h400/IMG_2485.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><p>I hope I haven't bored you too much. Normally on a weekend we'd walk somewhere other than close to home ( Mill Lake) but our other choices were flooded and it looks like the rain will continue for the next 4 or 5 days so flooded areas have no chance of draining. Below is a picture someone took of a lone tree close to a path at Willband Creek. <br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioCaft197c8EL9sEkyjTG_6Ev_nNSmMUygmTpo6On15BGM17T3v34rHoWUtt85Z35OmTTOJ08fN-v2kMRAWDFIQpz5DbzVSKwdWzHVnmEGvJWvutoMRUmz1fLsYQVFX2S6k_phDFui9ttKfInrNJJuxJ2R_sxIUb-aTgBXfddso556LkL8dHbmMFdUzg/s720/422825441_10161080143306826_383895309338448853_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="521" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioCaft197c8EL9sEkyjTG_6Ev_nNSmMUygmTpo6On15BGM17T3v34rHoWUtt85Z35OmTTOJ08fN-v2kMRAWDFIQpz5DbzVSKwdWzHVnmEGvJWvutoMRUmz1fLsYQVFX2S6k_phDFui9ttKfInrNJJuxJ2R_sxIUb-aTgBXfddso556LkL8dHbmMFdUzg/w290-h400/422825441_10161080143306826_383895309338448853_n.jpg" width="290" /></a></div><br /> While we were walking a great number of Canada Geese took to the air and passed quite low over our heads. There must have been a hundred or more. It was an amazing experience. They circled around the lake then flew South, no doubt looking for some breakfast. They'll be back this evening I'm sure.<br /><p></p><p> </p><p>My task for today was to repot my Haworthias. The biggest one ( in the yellow cup) is the mother/grandmother of the rest. They seem to do very well in a east window in my sun room.<br /></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn4hIVtd_xY60Wr7KUmzA1rc2W7xr8dOYklv3JXxMtx4t0nyP-ZbXKC8A_OEO7eX_JVEa273FIZ7LyF03J_AApdBgNSCXbcfTHGSwfjIetN6CYuNTgT-j-tWVrISajfTCLo-jeeVqE4nAXHtsV9OJVljkJ2wI5i8LZuciGR4jiGK1gDCV8lENqjt6VqA/s4608/IMG_2452.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3456" data-original-width="4608" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn4hIVtd_xY60Wr7KUmzA1rc2W7xr8dOYklv3JXxMtx4t0nyP-ZbXKC8A_OEO7eX_JVEa273FIZ7LyF03J_AApdBgNSCXbcfTHGSwfjIetN6CYuNTgT-j-tWVrISajfTCLo-jeeVqE4nAXHtsV9OJVljkJ2wI5i8LZuciGR4jiGK1gDCV8lENqjt6VqA/w400-h300/IMG_2452.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>Having done that I need to vacuum then the rest of the day is mine to do as I please. My latest library book began to bore me so I gave up on it. I'll see if the other one is any better.<p></p><p></p><p>Thanks for visiting!
