What I just finished reading........
The man's body is found in the early morning light by a local dog walker in the park outside Rosebank, a care home for troubled teens in the coastal village of Longwater. The victim is Josh, a staff member, who was due to work the previous night but never showed up.
DI Vera Stanhope is called out to investigate the death, with her only clue being the disappearance of one of the home's residents, fourteen year old Chloe Spence. Vera can't bring herself to believe that a teenager is responsible for the murder, but even she can't dismiss the possibility.
Vera, Joe and new team member Rosie Bell, are soon embroiled in the case, and when a second connected body is found near the Three Dark Wives monument in the wilds of the Northumberland countryside, superstition and folklore begin to collide with fact. Vera knows she has to find Chloe to get to the truth, and the dark secrets in their community that may be far more dangerous than she could have ever believed possible.
I enjoyed this book but was disappointed in the ending. Somehow it didn't seem right. Almost as if the author was tired of writing and wanted a quick finish. The previous "Vera" book I read was The Rising Tide and I think I liked that one more.
In the kitchen....
I tried a recipe for Baked Apple Fritters similar to the picture and they were very good BUT they were nothing like a fritter at all. A good apple cookie with a very tasty glaze ( that was briefly broiled at the end) but not a fritter! Oh well, at least they were delicious.
I roasted some cherry tomatoes that needed using up. We'll have them on our pizza for supper.
When I'm busy in the kitchen I think of my Mom and how she spent the first 10 years of married life with no electricity, no running water and the only cupboard she had was one similar to the one below.
When I was 6 we moved and although we still didn't have running water we did have hydro.
I remember she had a canister set like this one. I have since found some tins at the thrift store and now keep things like chocolate chips and coconut in them.
She did not have anything like this strange appliance.
Jeanna & Cathy..... No secret admirer. One of my sons arranged for the flowers to be delivered💗
That's it for today.
Thanks for visiting.
Hey, I need one of those GPS'.
ReplyDeleteSo true! I need a reminder why I walked into the next room! Love those vintage canisters and hoosier cabinet. When we moved to the apartment, I had no place to put mine so I gave it to my sister. She loves it.
ReplyDeleteHave a great evening!
Blessings,
Betsy
I must try the Vera books again. I tried the TV series and did not like it. Maybe the books are better.
ReplyDeleteThose sound like the apple fritters I made last week. Good, but not really like fritters.
I use a lot of vintage canisters too, and would have more if I had space!
Love the cabinet.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to read any of her books but plan too.
I've never seen an appliance like that. Interesting.
I have one of those tin cans.
That Hoosier Cabinet is a real keeper!
ReplyDeleteThat appliance is a space saver, but perhaps not very safe with the faucet right next to the burners. We are used to so much more space and efficiency now.
ReplyDeleteStill....so super sweet to get flowers from your son. I have a Hoosier cabinet, different color though, like the one your Mom had. Now, the stove with a built in sink is quite interesting.
ReplyDeleteThat is hard living no water or electric.
ReplyDeleteThat sink/Stove looks like a recipe for electrocution.
I have not read Vera books but have watched all the series it is done very well.
Nice son
Cathy
That appliance looks lethal! Electricity and water in the same unit? I wonder how many went off with a bang!
ReplyDeleteWe take it for granted that we have water, electricity, washing machine...
ReplyDeleteBut we forget that for our mothers it wasn't.
What a hard life they had, your metal cans are beautiful.
The book looks interesting too bad you were disappointed by the ending!
Happy Sunday Granny Marigold!
My dear mother ever could sleep, before she had once a week the washing day: She had to cook the wash in a big bowl, and then to dry it under the roof by ice-temperatures. So I was "clean" with one year, because may dear mother was so distressed to wash the babies napkins. But somehow in former times things were more quiet and more happy, because more simple.
ReplyDeleteSorry, that the book ended with a disappointment.
That stove/sink combo is cute. Not sure how safe it is!
ReplyDeleteOur mothers and grandmothers lived very hard lives in many ways, without all the conveniences of modern life. Your metal canisters are pretty. I've watched a lot of Vera, but have not read the stories.
ReplyDeleteThese apple fritters look great.
ReplyDeleteI like using cans.
My mother used to do the laundry in the laundry room and everything was hung out in the garden - woe betide if it rained - As a child I thought, oh dear, when I grow up I'll have to do that too... how wonderful that the washing machine came along and other wonderful things in the living and kitchen area.
I brew coffee by hand, however, without a machine.
Best wishes from Viola
Your dear mother...what a blessing she must have been to her family. I enjoyed all of the pictures that you shared with us. Aren't the canisters so bright and cheerful? I just love them.
ReplyDeleteThe strange appliance looks not very safe 😂 water and electricity a strange cohabitation! I also find the ending of some books very strange sometimes and find hard to read another book of the same author again, I give up.
ReplyDeleteOh at the things we surely take for granted. I just told my husband that I unnerves me to think we will be without power. However at least we do have a wood fireplace, gas cooker outside and we keeps lots of water in our barn. That is a blessing when to comes to power outage. I hope your week is wonderful to you. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteI have an old hutch just like that, and I love it. When we downsized into a smaller home I didn't have room for it, so now it's at my granddaughters for her to enjoy. I'm always looking for a new book to read, the way this one ends I think I'll pass. I like good endings.☺
