Alliums

Lovely morning for a walk. Didn't see any ducklings today but the goslings are growing lanky and losing their cuteness :(    . Several bunnies were out and about. Some are so used to people that unless there's a dog nearby they don't hop away. I hope they don't become lunch for the eagle.

After we got back I walked around and checked to see what's blooming today. I noticed that the alliums near the parking area in by the street are opening.  There are regular alliums, with their purple globes, and the Sicilian Honey Garlic Alliums ( Nectaroscordum  siculum) which are less common. I believe my original bulbs were a gift from Eldest Daughter. They are easy to grow; I only wish their stalks were as sturdy as the purple alliums are.

Above photo and write-up from the internet

Allium siculum (syn. Nectaroscordum siculum), known as honey garlic, Sicilian honey lily, Sicilian honey garlic, or Mediterranean bells. ...
This perennial exudes a strong garlic scent when bruised, hence its common name of Sicilian Honey Garlic. Easy to grow, undemanding and beautiful.

 What's blooming in your garden?

  1. The goslings around our lake look much like yours. Oh how they grow so fast. Your alliums are so pretty. I'm hoping to visit the plant nursery this weekend. Alas, our Rhodies have stopped blooming.

  2. I have a few of the purple globe alliums blooming, that return each year. At the Whidbey cabin garden, the few we planted a few years ago are happy and increasing in the dry, sandy soil.

  3. In your first picture, that gosling looks like he is ready for war! He is lunging at something or someone. Your photos are beautiful! And I love the heartwarming illustration at the end of your posts! I live in a 6th floor apartment in Montreal, so I have never had a garden. I do love them, though, and enjoy seeing the flowers and plants of those who do. I have never had a green thumb. I am very good with animals, though, as I have had cats (and a few cage birds)...not at the same time, most of my life. I love nature, and I absolutely love your posts. Thank you so much for all you share.

  4. I have a pathetic, yet funny story to tell about alliums. I first saw these plants as something I wanted to grow in my garden, so I found a few to plant last fall. Unfortunately, I must have forgotten that I had planted them (oh, the humor of getting older🙄).This spring when they began to come up though they were purple they reminded me so much of garlic chives I snapped off a few of the bulbs thinking I would keep them from spreading all over my garden ( garlic chives give me nightmares from years past!) But I did let the ones not fully opened remain, just in case I could solve the mystery of what these plants were. Then I remembered!!!!
Maybe next year they will come back and be larger like yours.

  8. Those allium flowers are truly lovely! I like them much better than the "common" variety. Let's see, where could I fit some in to my garden....

  9. My tulip, daffodils and irises have all bloomed and died. And now the garden is flowerless until the weather warms up, but the lilac bushes are in full bloom... does that count?

  12. The goselings I saw during our holidays were still tiny ones. I love geese and behind our balcony there was one on the lake that was watching me each time I went out! Good guardians and alarm! 😂

  13. I just posted my "what's blooming" roundup this morning, so how funny you should ask! My allium are the purple globe ones, and finished blooming a couple weeks ago. I used to have some pretty, short pink and yellow ones years ago. I would like to grow those again.

  15. My Irises are blooming...and the weigelia has been blooming profusely. The Solomon's Seal is still pretty and green, but the little white bells are disappearing. My Miss Kim Lilac has really been showing off this year...the first time in the three years that I've had it.

  17. Nothing blooming in our garden cause we don't have one! :-) Just a couple of potted plants on the balcony. The goslings are growing fast too. We've had gorgeous, perfect weather days for a few days but rain expected tomorrow. We need it so no complaints.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  18. I love your unique alliums. Mine are just the regular globe ones which are not yet open. I do find that they self-seed so need to deadhead them which I have to be more diligent about. Only my bleeding hearts and irises are in bloom right now. The Grape Hyacinths are now done. My very early yellow daylily (that blooms even before the Stella D"oro) will open soon but I always find that its yellow flowers just blend in with the dandelions on the lawn, lol.

  20. The goslings are looking lanky. Yeah for having things blooming. My Iris are just finishing, which disappoints me. They didn't bloom as long as they normally do, I think all the rain we've had did them in. Plus, I didn't have as many bloom this year as I have in other years. So for right now, it's mostly green everywhere because of all the rain. Next up to bloom will be the lilies, and I have lots of them. Pinks, and reds with yellow. So, hopefully soon...it will be very colorful. Though we're having a terrible time with the rabbits and deer eating things this year. Wish we had some Eagles here to have lunch on some of the rabbits and bunnies. They're really beginning to annoy me. I'm wondering if that's why I had fewer Iris blooming? They've really gone after my Blue Muffin Viburnum. I've got Deer Scram and Rabbit Scram on order. Fingers crossed it helps get rid of them.
