Flooding and a Question

We have had a great deal of rain these past days and many low lying areas have been affected. Some of our streets are closed and even the U.S. border crossing is closed ( flooding extends to that area as well.)  Fortunately so far our street has not been affected but I know that some of the farms, like the one below, have hardly recovered from the last flood.

On to another subject....I bought some wool dryer balls and am looking forward to seeing what difference, if any, they make.

I'm always trying to use up half boxes of this or that and this morning I used a partial bag of marshmallows and a box of instant Butterscotch pudding to make  Rice Krispy squares ( I had a half a box of the red & green ones from last Christmas!! ( Please don't judge me lolol).  I can't see why that wouldn't work.

Yet another subject, on which I'd be interested in knowing your opinion.  We were with a group yesterday and a couple of folks gave out Christmas cards to everyone. In my opinion if you are going to wish a person a Merry Christmas in person why also give a card?

I've rambled on long enough.  Both my girls are coming over shortly. I better put the kettle on for tea.

Thanks for coming by!

  1. They probably didn't want to spend $40 mailing all the cards. 😆 I may be wrong, but is it 73 cents to mail a letter these days? My stamps say Forever, but I think that's so we don't notice price increases.

I remember tinsel! We had a carpet sweeper and usually had to cut the tinsel out of it at the end of the year. Ah, those were the days.

  2. I do remember the old fashioned Christmas tree with all the silver tinsel, looking like icicles! As far as Christmas cards go, I believe this tradition is slowly fading out. For one thing, the cost of postage (when sent by postal mail), for another paper use is slowly diminishing, as people are trying to save the trees.
Nowadays, you can send a Christmas card over the internet! Personally, although I don't mind receiving cards, I don't expect them, and I am also phasing out sending and giving them. Not that I have many people to give to, because I have no siblings, my parents are long deceased (in the 1980's), and I have no children. I have cousins, though, but I see no need to send a Christmas card if I can send an email to them letting them know I am thinking of them.
We can send someone our love and best wishes any time of year, not just Christmas. Anyway, since you asked, I just wanted to share my thoughts.
Thank you so much for your posts.

  3. Flooding is so sad, and so damaging. I saw photos from Kent, Washington this morning. Just makes people feel helpless.
I sometimes tuck the card in with the gift of I am seeing someone before the mail would get to them. But I really don't mind if someone hands me a card.
As for the tree...I have a friend who still puts those "icicles" on her tree. She says it isn't done til they go on!

  4. I hope that you are not adversely affected by the flooding! You have me curious - how do you make your Rice Krispie squares using the butterscotch pudding mix? In regards to the Christmas card question...I agree with you. If I am meeting people in person, I don't feel the need to hand out a greeting card unless it is a photo card of our family.

  5. I think that giving out Christmas cards made them feel better and that's a good thing. We shouldn't judge or want to copy or whatever.Just be happy to get both a card and a verbal greeting! That's my 2 cents worth anyway!

  6. Well I say that is one way to save on postage! My cousins and I used to exchange cards at our Christmas gathering. Yes I love the icicles /tinsel on the trees!

  8. The flooding looks awful. Glad your street isn't effected and it stays that way. I'm of the opinion like you about the Christmas cards. Used to mail out lots but the postage is so expensive now.

  10. I remember tinsel as a very little girl. I do not think ours looked as lovely as the photo.

  11. Everyone does Christmas cards differently. I do both when it comes to church family I see in person.

  12. Oh I love that picture of the Christmas tree with tinsel. That was always my favorite look for a tree when I was growing up. My daughter still hangs some tinsel on her tree. I love it. Sorry about your flooding....how awful. Hope things get better soon in your area. I love the Christmas Card tradition and continue to mail out cards. I love looking at all the cards I've received at the end of the season and knowing those people were thinking of me, and hope I was thinking of them too....whether putting the card into my hand, or mailing it.

  13. Oh the tinsel tree brings back so many sweet memories! If I am meeting someone in person, then I do not give them a card. I hope you are...and will be...safe from the flooding.

  14. The rain was crazy yesterday! I hope the water levels recede quickly. I like to give cards to friends, and mail a few as well. Postage is getting to be ridiculous.

  17. Polly, put the kettle on,
    Polly, put the kettle on,
    Polly, put the kettle on,
    We'll all have tea.
My heart truly goes out to everyone dealing with the flooding. I live in an area where it happens often, and it’s incredible how destructive it can be. I really hope the waters stay far away from you. As for handing out Christmas cards in person, I’m not sure it has the same charm. Part of the fun, for me, is finding one in the mailbox and opening it with that little spark of anticipation about who it’s from.

  18. We've been really concerned with the flooding out your way. Luckily our daughter doesn't live in a flood-prone area.

  19. I hope the water level will lower soon and the rain stops so that you can do your everyday walk again. We did not have these kind of Christmas tree here. We hardly send Christmas cards now

  20. Well, I definitely remember our Christmas trees when I was young dripping with silver tinsel. Each piece had to be put on individually. :)
I guess when it comes to the Christmas cards, I agree with Elizabeth. I also do both when it comes to church family.
How nice that you are able to have tea with your daughters. Makes me homesick for mine. xx

  21. I debated about cards this year. I decided to slim down my list and send letters. Postage has gone up and people are trying to cut expenses, but handing out cards in person is just not the same, In my opinion. Still, I will do a couple that way.
I do still like getting mail.

  22. My memories of silver tinsel is the family arguing about how to put them on. Some thought one at a time, others several at a time and the kids always thought why not just throw them and see how they land, LOL
I have never experienced a flood and I cannot image how terrible it could be having mud and water rushing through your home or seeing animals in the fields swept away. You and your county are in my prayers.

I love Christmas cards…if handed to me or in the mail or email….and I adore when someone says ‘ Merry Christmas ‘ … just makes me happy. Have a lovely weekend and enjoy your family…how nice to have tea with your daughters, very special …and Merry Christmas! HoHoHo, Virginia

  25. I love getting a card - makes me feel more "connected", and that's tricky to come by nowadays. I have exactly one Christmas card so far...
