It continues to be hot and dry. The main part of the house, kitchen, living room, and sunroom were
31C which is about 86F, so too hot for comfort. The bedrooms have A/C thankfully and that's where we have our computers and our books. Also comfy chairs. I finished reading Into the Darkest Day by Kate Hewitt and found it very interesting. I can heartily recommend it.

Abby has done everything she can to keep her life quiet, unassuming and safe. Living on an apple farm in rural Wisconsin, nothing can shake her stability. Until a mysterious stranger arrives—with a Purple Heart he insists belongs to her grandfather. A medal that his own grandmother had kept for decades. But how did she end up with Abby’s grandfather’s medal? And what secrets and lies will be uncovered when they find out the truth about the past?
A heartbreakingly powerful, epic love story about courage, true love and broken trusts, Into the Darkest Day is an unforgettable story perfect for fans of Nora Roberts, Kristin Hannah and The Notebook.
The internet says he is the best-selling author of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series. I wonder if any of you have read his books and liked them. I'd like to know if I'm alone in not caring for his style.
On a brighter note we had the first green beans of the season for supper. We made a soup using those beans as well as onions and also potatoes from our garden. Even the Summer Savoury was home grown. Only the Bay leaf was not.
As well as the first beans ( which were Rattlesnake beans. The other 2 varieties I sowed are not as early obviously) we had our first ripe tomato. Two more are almost ready. I wonder if we should bring them in because of the raccoons that seem to pay nightly visits.
Thanks for coming by.
I haven't read any of these books. I read non fiction and I love getting books at thrift stores. Your soup sounds delicious and your tomato 🍅 is beautiful. I love the illustration and quote.
ReplyDeleteI added "Into the Darkest Day" to my book list. i read one McCall Smith a long time ago but I don't think I read any more. I don't think I was very excited about it either.
ReplyDeleteI liked Alexander McCall Smith's No 1 Detective Agency series, the first few at any rate, but couldn't get into the Edinburgh ones at all.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for your garden-vegetables! Oh, the first red tomato! Our tomatoes still are green. We had several very hot days and since several days we have a mix of clouds and sun, some rain and cooler temperatures. The forest needs the water urgently.
ReplyDeleteThe humidity here is out of control, even though we haven't reached those 100 degree days, it feels terrible. I am letting the birds and squirrels have all my figs. That fig tree has been to hell and back and I'm not into making jam this year. I didn't care for the #1 Ladies Detective book(s). I am always on the hunt for a good read!
ReplyDeleteDarkest Day sounds interesting. I've never read any of Smith's books. Glad to hear you are getting some nice vegetables from the garden.
ReplyDeleteHome grown is always the best!!! Enjoyed the shoutout on the books. ☺♥
ReplyDeleteNice you have someplace in the house that is cool to rest and read.
ReplyDeleteI have not been able to enjoy Alexander McCall Smith's writing, either. It's great that there are books for every taste! Yay for garden produce! Here it's a few tomatoes, cucumbers, and one zucchini so far. I love summer! Stay cool!
ReplyDeleteThe first book sounds really good. I'm not familiar with either author that you mentioned today, so I guess I'm not much else with your question regarding the second book and author.
ReplyDeleteYour first tomato is so pretty and red. We've only had a few little yellow cherry tomatoes. We've just finished off a broccoli salad made with broccoli from our garden though. : )
Alexander Mcall Smith has a very distinctive 'own' style. I did enjoy some of the Ladies Detective books, but the writing style became a little monotonous.
ReplyDeleteI've personally never liked Smith's Ladies Detective series though they are popular. It seems I have read one of his other books I rather enjoyed a while back. This is the first year I have planted summer savory.
ReplyDeleteAlways nice to enjoy home-grown vegetables.
ReplyDeleteStay as cool as you can in the heat.
All the best Jan
I loved his books. My favorite series is 44 Scotland Street with Bertie.
ReplyDeleteWe had a bit of a break from the heat and humidity today but it is supposed to return tomorrow. We enjoyed it today though.
ReplyDeleteBlessings and hugs,
Betsy
I love Mma Ramotswe! But i listened to the first few books first, so I knew the pronunciations and the cadence of the language, so when I read them I have that in my head. Darkest Days probably would not interest me as I don't usually like romances, although this does sound like something out of the ordinary romance.
ReplyDeleteOur electric bill is going to be scary this month. In June it was $77.00, then the most recent was $208! Lord knows what August will bring as the AC has run nonstop.
J. has been bringing in tomatoes not fully ripe as raccoons and possums can squeeze under the electric fence. I've picked Roma beans, but the ones in the raised bins weren't the best quality due to our long spell of hot and dry weather.
ReplyDeleteI have read quite a few of McCall Smith's novels, and really enjoyed them, at a particular season of my life. My late husband and I liked them best as audio books on car trips together. McCall Smith himself said, when I heard him speak 20 years or so ago, "As you know, nothing happens in my novels." Because of that, when I was driving and my husband would fall asleep in the car, he didn't miss much of the story ;-)
ReplyDeleteBut they are definitely a "light" type of reading, and as some of your commenters have noted, have a certain sameness about them. In any case, they don't fit my mood anymore!
