Pruning my Cactus

We're having a wet week. 6C this morning.  I carried an umbrella when we walked by the lake. At Willband we often see dozens of swans but here on our little lake in the middle of town they're seen less often but this morning there were two!! That was a nice start to my day.

I started addressing Christmas cards and will continue later. My hand gets tired when writing.

Thanksgiving Cactus are finished blooming now and this is the time to prune them back. They were too wide to fit on our widest window sills so I got at them with the scissors and here's one of them with the cuttings. I am going to take those and see if the ladies at the thrift store are interested in starting some little plants for themselves.  When I took my extra Summer Savory they were happy to have that so maybe they'll want these.

We've often used this recipe for fudge and it's simple and very good.  Today I tried making it with 2 cups of chocolate chips instead of 3 in order to make a chocolate sauce. It worked very well so that will be what I make in the future.   One thing I noticed is that my can of condensed milk was not the size mentioned. Mine was 10 ounces but since that's the size of all available condensed milk brands obviously it's what I'll use.

That's it for today.  Thanks for coming by.

  2. Your fudge looks so scrumptious. When I read the recipe, I realized that it is identical to my recipe for "Rum Balls" with the addition of 1/4 cup of rum, chill till its easy to roll into balls and then coat with cocoa powder.

  3. We're supposed to get more snow tomorrow. Not excited for that at all.
The fudge recipe looks good and pretty easy.
    Blessings and hugs,

  4. Oh, I bet the ladies will love to have those cactus cuttings, the green is gorgeous …much like your green thumb! Now I want to make fudge! My mom had the Russell Stover fudge recipe and it required lots of stirring and stirring…the family took turns stirring….as I kid I complained my arm would fall off ( I probably wasn’t much help)….but it was always yummy and fun to be together in the kitchen…thanks for the memories. Wishing you a wonderful weekend, be well, be cozy…bestest, Virginia

  10. I love a fun food experiment. Sauce sounds good. Have you ever tried good local maple syrup mixed with cocoa powder? Pretty good! Great on doughnuts.

  12. I should have cut mine back but didn't, so it is a bit straggly....but flowering well.

  13. I've never dared to cut my cactus back... now I've seen you picture I'm going to have a go. I have successfully rooted a little piece last year which flowered this year. It will give me an interest through January and February.

  14. Will you pot some of the cuttings from your cactus? I'm usually not successful at repotting anything, {{sigh}} I love plants but I don't have a 'green thumb'. Love the fudge recipe, thanks for sharing.

  15. Your cactus is so healthy and full. I've given up and tossed mine a couple of months ago. How delicious that chocolate fudge looks, and so easy to prepare. Fun to see the swans!

  16. Your chocolate sauce is very convenient for me. I make it often, but instead of condensed milk, I make it with dulce de leche. Dulce de leche is made with milk and sugar, cooked together for a while.

  17. I love that fudge recipe, and you can do it with a microwave. Add in what ever you like - I made it one year for the kids and it was a hit. (:

  18. The recipe is probably printed when the cans were 14 oz. Normally! My husband likes to use the word shrinkflation food is often made smaller as inflation goes higher.

  19. We have a white Christmas Cactus that's just exploding into bloom! And Mrs. F.G. is in the kitchen making fudge!

  20. I understand about addressing Christmas cards. I did mine at the pace of five a day until I had the list completed.
I had no idea about how and when to prune cactus plants. Thank you for this valuable information because I will start working on mine.
Thank you, too, for the fudge recipe! I will give this a try so I can put some in my Christmas gift boxes/tins that I give at Christmas.

  21. That fudge sounds easy enough that maybe I could even make it. I have never been good at making fudge. Maybe it's because my mom never made it so I never learned from her.
I'm truly impressed with your cactus that's another thing I can't do is grow house plants. My vegetable gardens do great and so do my flowers and shrubs outside but when I try to grow indoors I flop. 🥴

  22. I am timid about pruning plants, so I would probably just let the cactus sprawl all over. Sadly my Christmas card list gets smaller each year. We lost the last uncle this past year at age 98.

  23. I always do my Christmas Cards a few at a time.
Your cactus does look very healthy.

    All the best Jan

  24. Mmmm , fudge!
I have everything out to do cards, but haven't started. Seems like something keeps getting in the way. Maybe tomorrow.

  25. That will be a lot of new cactus plants if the ladies take them. Very sweet of you to share them. I wrote my cards last night.
