Good-bye to September

It seems just a few days ago we were welcoming September, and now it's the last day.  We had another chilly morning ( 5C or 41F) followed by a sunny day. The tomato plants got pulled out and the good-sized green ones put away in case they really do ripen. Which I'm not at all sure of  .We've eaten so many that we won't be too upset if they don't.

Walmart had big bags of gourds on sale so I bought a bag and came home to re-do the box on the table.I still need to find an orange candle for the old candlestick ( made of links of chain welded together).

 This is my Spring/Summer bird feeder. Today DH took the top part off and put back the Fall/Winter one and I slipped off  the 3 sided pink cover that fit over the tiled 'column'. Voila!   Good thing I have a patient spouse who builds what I dream up.

                         Oops!  I see it needs a bit of straightening up.

The littlest didn't go to school today due to tummy upset. We  made.construction paper turkeys...the kind where you draw around the child's hand to make the outline. Some of his got embellished before being stuck on my fridge.  Actually, now that I look at it some of those turkeys look rather strange.
Our Canadian Thanksgiving being in a couple of weeks means there will be a lot of turkey projects as well as other Fall themed artwork around.

A Short Post

Our weather continues to be lovely and I find I am outside for a large part of my day. I keep busy but I move slowly and at the end of the day I can't see that I've accomplished a lot but I do enjoy being outside.  Actually, puttering about is what I like to do.

We did go for a pleasant drive in the country trying to find roads where there was little traffic ( not easy to find).  We did come upon this little stand by the side of the road and I  bought some grapes, Asian pears ( I think that's what they're called) and the last 4 of the gourds there.  I should have bought the bag of "Heritage" apples. They are on the bottom shelf in front. I'm curious what a Heritage apple tastes like.

This and That

Yesterday my DIL helped me plant those Spring bulbs ( well, actually she did 90% of the actual planting and I helped fill in the trench). I hope they will all bloom in Spring and to prevent squirrels from digging them up DH covered the area with a large piece of wire mesh.

Near where we were busy planting bulbs my DH and the littlest were taking down the trellis. Haven't decided yet whether to put it back up or not. It is getting shabby.

 There was no school today so the littlest spent time with us.  We played Math games and he played with my calculator while I baked. Then he showed me how to play a game called Jenga. It's really simple to play . The blocks are piled in a tower with 3 going one way and the next 3 in the other direction. Once the tower is up you take turns carefully removing any block and the one who causes the whole thing to collapse loses. I was amazed that a piece near the bottom can be pulled out without necessarily causing a tumble.

Right now he and his grandad are learning to play Chess. They are reading the directions on his computer and trying very hard to make sense of it all. I wish them luck. In any case it gives me time to check out some blogs and even post this one.  I hope I haven't bored you too much.

Autumn

 I think my first thought when I woke up this morning was that it is the first day of Fall. We're having lovely weather, clear skies and warm, not hot, sunshine. Doesn't it make you want to make an apple crisp?  Or a hearty soup? Or both.  Hmmm. Maybe that's what I'll make for supper.

This and That

My lunch was extra yummy because my salad included sliced pear and Feta cheese. Tomatoes and cucumbers from my tiny garden and my favourite... Butter lettuce.  Isn't it neat how you can buy it with the root ball still attached?    Too bad it has to be in a largish clear 'bowl' which means more plastic even if it does go in recycle.

 This week's "job" of washing tea cups continues. I did another 40 this morning. The table topper is off center because that's where the unwashed tea cups waited for their turn in the soapy sink. the clean ones are on the counter.

This cupboard has been wiped and is ready for clean tea cups to be put back.

There!  Anbother bunch done.  Now it's time to take a break and enjoy the warm sunshine.

A Birthday

I have two grandsons and today the older one turned 18. Here he is with his sweet Mom. They came for a pizza supper and we had cake but the only candle that could be found was a Scooby Doo candle.

 Not much is happening around here. The weather continues to be lovely and I sit outside a lot. Any gardening is still a bit hard to do because I'm stiff and sore but each day I feel a bit better.
I've begun the job of taking down and washing  all my tea cups that are not behind closed cupboard doors. It's a big job. When I say taking down I mean someone else takes them down and later puts them back. I'm no longer trusted on chairs ( I wonder why not?)

A Pleasant Sunday

We had more gorgeous sunny weather so DH and drove out into the country and found a nice dike to walk on. The river was calm, the big old trees just hanging over the water. We met only one man who was walking his 3 dogs. I thanked him for leashing them as soon as he saw us. He said they'd never bite but probably would have jumped on us.

After our walk we continued to drive along country roads and saw a sign that said apples and pears for sale. We turned in and there was a cute little store right on the yard but not a soul in sight. We wandered around, took some pictures, still no one came out. In the end we bought 2 bags of apples from the stand, one of red and one of green/yellow apples. The latter are SO tasty. I wish we'd gotten a lot more. There was an old cookie tin to put the money in. Not too many people go with the honour system any more, For obvious reasons.
  After we came home we made 2 apples crisps ( one for us and one to give away) , froze one container for winter enjoyment and there's still quite a few left. All for two dollars. Can't beat that.

Thank you all for the sympathy after my careless fall. I'm still very stiff and sore but determined to do everything I normally do just it takes longer. You can be sure that for a long time to come I will hold on to that hand rail and be careful of slippery socks. But... knowing me I'll find some other way of getting my bruises. It does run in my family, this ability to run into things or trip on them.

A fall in Fall

Yesterday I was wearing a lovely soft pair of socks as I came down these stairs. I was careless and stepped too close to the edge of the step and  I slipped. My feet went right out from under me and I went down the steps on my back. Luckily there's a landing so it was only 4 steps but I feel very bruised and battered. In an effort to stop myself from falling I clutched at the railing and hurt my shoulder as well. It always amazed me how in a moment of not paying attention I can mange to hurt myself.

On a far more pleasant subject... I bought these bulbs at Walmart earlier this week. It's too early to put them in the ground but the selection is best right now. I had a hard time choosing.

This is the newly cleared and worked through area in the front. I plan on making a trench behind the Daylilies and fill it with Spring bulbs. Behind that I will plant perennials that will grow high enough to disguise the foliage once it's finished blooming and it gets yellowed.  Transplanting the Stella D'Oro daylilies didn't stop them from blooming.

And the tomatoes just keep on coming. This has been such a good year for tomatoes!!
Something has been munching on that one on the right. I wonder what?

Apples, and Rosamunde Pilcher

It's the time of the year when fruit stands are full of apples and I am taking advantage of the lower prices that the abundance brings. I've made a couple of trips already and this morning went back for more. The kind I bought are GALA and I paid .59 lb. I don't peel them completely before slicing and freezing them. Probably take about a third of the peel off and that is mainly because the grands prefer less peel.

I've been so disappointed lately in the books I've bought ( at thrift stores) or have requested from the library. So today, after yet another uninteresting one that I quit reading after some 30 pages,  I took down one of my Rosamunde Pilcher collection. This one is short stories  Flowers in the Rain.  A much nicer read.

Are you enjoying the holiday Monday?  I did laundry as per usual this morning but now will take a nice break. I will read and later my oldest GD is dropping by.  Then, at some point I'll deal with those apples.

This and That

Do you like my newest apron?  It has nice big pockets  and I really like the pink and black print too. It was a thrift store purchase of course.

I cleared off the top of my Mom's old treadle machine to dust it and took the opportunity to show the littlest how the machine worked. Too bad the belt is broken or we could actually have sewn something.

             After I dusted we decorated the dining room for Fall.

My DH built this sturdy wood box that I filled with Indian corn that I've had for many years and ceramic gourds etc.. as well as the lantern which I'm not too sure I like but I can always change it.

When we finished decorating the little guy helped me bake chocolate chip cookies, While they  were baking and I was working on peach crisp he decided to get his modeling clay up and be creative.

                He made wonderful swirl patterns by mixing colours.

On our walk this morning we passed a garage sale so we had a look around. We had brought no money but the woman whose gs it was put 4 tea cups with no saucers and one cup and saucer set aside for me. I went back later and got them. $3 for the lot.  That's them lined up on my cluttered counter.

Welcome September

Are you glad it's September?  I sure am ready for cooler weather, renewed energy for fall projects,  nights when a cozy quilt feels just right, and days that somehow seem longer than they did in summer.

On the subject of projects, we are off to get a truck load of mushroom compost because I intend
 ( with the help of my sons) to do some much needed work on the front garden.  This being a long weekend ( appropriately called Labour Day )  the guys will have an extra day off so I won't feel TOO badly taking up their time. I'm sure pictures will be taken and posted.
