This and That

My peach coloured Thanksgiving Cactus is blooming.

I found these pretty place mats on yesterday's visit to the thrift store. I had a big box to donate so I don't feel badly bringing home small treasures. These mats are not really quilted. The fabric is made to look like it though.

Here is a bit of trivia that I found interesting since I give myself 30 pages to decide if I'm going to continue reading a book. Unless I see that the language is offensive in which case I can tell right away that I don't want to continue reading. I wonder how many people would agree with this.

Ever heard of the 50 page rule? A librarian has suggested that for books, if you're 50 or under, you read 50 pages and give yourself permission, at that point, to stop reading if you're not enjoying it. If you're older than 50, you subtract your age from 100 and read that many pages before putting it down for good.

Not much is happening here. It's raining and rather dismal outside. Fortunately I have an interesting book to read.  Thanks for visiting.

  1. I have never seen a peach color Thanksgiving Cactus. It so pretty! I agree with you on book reading. If I cannot get through the first chapter, I am finished with it. Enjoy your rainy weather with a good book!

  2. That is a good rule for starting a book. Sometimes a book just doesn't appeal to me when I start it!

  4. Interesting about the 50 page rule and subtracting your age from the number 100! For myself, I read the first five or so chapters and if I am not fully engaged in the story, I read the last few chapters to see if the ending proved to be interesting. If it makes me curious as to how the story progressed, then I go back and read it the book. Otherwise, I move on to a different book. Yes, I know, I ruin it for myself by reading the ending but it works for me. :)

  6. When I thrift for books, I read the first two sentences to see if the story will "hook" me and if it doesn't, back into the stacks it goes!

  7. so i can read 24 pages before i give up. although, frequently i know that i don't want to continue reading long before that!

  8. Grandma, young people around here don’t have the patience to read long texts, and like you said, they stop reading after 50 pages.

  9. It's taken me years to learn that I don't have to finish a book! The nuns at my convent prep school were very strict about that.

  10. Hmmm, that sounds like an interesting rule. I love getting library books because I never have to feel guilty if I don't want to continue reading. If I pay good money for a book, I feel like I HAVE to read the entire thing. :-)
The placemats look great. I wish we had a reasonable thrift store. I went to the Good Will looking for a bundt pan earlier in the week. Somehow mine was lost in all of our moves. They wanted $12.99 for the only one I found! I came home and bought one on Amazon for $9.99. I don't think their prices are very good at all anymore at Good Will.

  11. That Thanksgiving cactus is absolutely beautiful. It's just FULL of bloom! My second Thanksgiving cactus that bloomed just lost its last bloom this morning. I found that information from a librarian very interesting. Going by that standard, I only have to read 24 pages before I decided whether or not to continue reading! :) And I really like that last graphic you posted. It's so true, if we just take the time to notice them.

  13. I've not come across the 50 page rule!

We've had quite a rainy day here, so I enjoyed a little reading.

Have a happy and peaceful weekend.

    All the best Jan

  14. What a fine and funny but helpful tipp how to beginn to read a book and then decide, if you want to read more - - -

I love the bear with the quote.

You always find something nice in the thrift store - not without giving something, so you are in the right middle of good amount of nice things in your house .

  15. Lovely placemats.
I don't have a specific number of pages to read before I decide not to read it, but if it doesn't grab me I don't read.

  16. I can't get over the color of your Thanksgiving cactus. I think I have said that every year, but it is soooo gorgeous. I have liked every book by author D.E. Stevenson and I have read many of them. I am very picky about authors. I tried reading books by William Kent Kruger but they gave me nightmares. And I agree, offensive language is an absolute NO in the books I read. You always find a sweet treasure at your thrift store. How fun! Take good care Granny. diane in northern wis

  17. The cactus is gorgeous. Such a pretty color. I didn't know there was a Thanksgiving Cactus. Interesting idea about how to decide whether or not to finish a book. I come and go with that. Sometimes I force myself to read it, particularly if it was highly rated or recommended. Sometimes I'm glad I played through, as some are late developing; but often I feel like I've wasted my time and then I wish I would have followed by first instincts about not finishing it. So, tomorrow I turn 75, so I should decide by page 25. Gonna keep that in mind. Nice find at the thrift store, they really do look quilted.

  18. Your cactus is beautiful and what lovely placemats! My cactus has yet to bloom, it’s raining today here…a great day for reading and staying inside. I usually give a book about 3 chapters until I decide to continue but I really hate to give up on a book. I hope your weekend is full of blessings and I bet you cook or bake something yummy! Thank you for the visit. Best, Virginia
