A Rant and 2 Recipes that Failed

Good Morning!!    I hope the sun is shining where you live.  It's mostly cloudy here but mild.  I had a lovely walk except for one thing.  I had some books to drop off at the little library that's almost right on  the path where I walk. Imagine my surprise when I opened the door to find some very ignorant people had started a fire inside and left a big mess.  I cleaned it up best I could but the bits of burnt paper need to be vacuumed out and those books that are beyond saving must be removed.  GRRRR.

I tried my hand at making Sweet Marie Bars on the weekend. The recipe is very easy and quick but for some reason mine was somewhat disappointing. The recipe called for 2 cups of Rice Krispies and I wondered at the time whether I should add more but decided to stick with the 2 cups. It turned out a bit flat. Then I wasn't quick enough sprinkling chocolate chips on top and they didn't melt. Oh well, the result was tasty and I took it along to my youngest son's place when we went over to play Dominoes.
Another failure I had this weekend was a Cheese Souffle .  The recipe said to bake it for 35 minutes so I set the timer at 30 in case it was done sooner. I have no idea if it ever did rise ( I didn't peek until the timer went.) but it was as flat as a pancake when I opened the oven.  Nevertheless it was very edible and exactly what I was craving.

I have no idea what went wrong. All this to say I have plenty of recipes that don't go as planned!!

Just for fun I went looking on-line for pictures of other's failed cakes.

Thanks for visiting,  Feel free to tell me about your failed creations.

  1. I can't believe someone started a fire in the little library - what could they have been thinking!!!
Sorry to hear that your baking didn't turn out so great.

  2. While I see these wondrful cakes I eat a nut-cake, selfmade, and drink some applewine in the night. Have a good night! Delicious! Without my cake I would not be able to see this without getting hunggry!

  3. I don't recall ever having real failures, but then I don't experiment with baking recipes. Baking is science and the ingredients must be balanced.

  4. As long as they taste good that is all that matters. I can never get fudge to turn out right...I should give up!

  5. It might be easier for me to tell you about the things the DID turn out right. I baked a fruit cake yesterday. Could have sworn the recipe said bake at 350...it was 300. The cake cooked to quickly and was too hard and brown on the bottom. You are such a good cook. Seems like most of your baking turns out beautifully. How mean for someone to start a fire there. What's wrong with folks lately??

  6. How awful for someone to start a fire in the little library. I don't imagine they will be caught but I hope that they don't do it again. I have often had baking failures but for the most part they were pretty tasty. I don't remember throwing any of them out!

  7. When I read your title I couldn't imagine a rant coming from you. After reading your post I would be ranting right along with you. What a terrible thing to do. Hard to figure out the things some people do.
Sorry to hear about your kitchen failures. Although they look pretty darn good to me and at least they were edible. My meatloafs are often failures. They taste fine but seem to fall apart when I slice them.

  8. Oh how awful about the fire 😥😥😥😥 I have had failures too but can't think of them, other than when I was 17 I was trying to make frosting and confused the powder sugar and flour!

  9. I tried Dresdner Stollen once - Christmas cake with raisins - which got completely dry and fell into pieces when cut, we ate it anyway, but now I always buy from the bakery :-))
    I wish you a nice day :-)))
We have wonderful sunshine, ideal for being outside.

  10. Hi G.M.- You are certainly good at baking delicious edibles. Have a great week there. I'm rather sad about your little Library being torched- people these days are crazy- they spoil it for the decent people- hope the Police catch the culprit. Best Wishes. KEV.

  11. My failure this year is mince pies. Every year they have been delicious. This year for some reason, the pastry tastes like cardboard.
    We still ate them!

    1. Pastry can be a problem I find. Too bad about your mince pies but at least they were still edible.

  12. Yep! Happens to me to. But my husband is ok with it, he says we can eat our mistakes too. We've had some laughs.

  13. I too would be very maddened by the vandalism of your little library...so totally senseless. I'm sorry that your Sweet Marie Bars didn't turn out. My recipe calls for 1 cup of corn flakes, 1 cup of rice krispies and 1 cup of chopped peanuts. What was all in your "syrup"? Mine calls for 3/4 - 1 cup of chocolate chips melted and then spread on after it has cooled. But yours will no doubt have tasted good regardless. Yes, I have had flops in the kitchen too - the most memorable being a big batch of yeast dough wherein I had added salt instead of sugar so it never rose.

    1. If you google Sweet Marie Bars and take a look at the one by Allrecipes, that's the one I used. Yes, my guys loved it ( but not as much as the failed choc chip cookie base with the fudge topping!!)

    2. There are 2 listed under Allrecipes. The one called "No Bake Sweet Marie Bars" is like mine except that mine calls for the corn flakes as well as the rice krispies and peanuts and I put mine in a 9 x 9 pan.

  14. I remember tiptoeing carefully when my mother had souffles in the oven! For them to fall or deflate was a serious thing, although the taste was always as wonderful! My brownies perpetually sink in the middle. Too much oil. The Krispies creation -- pass it off as the new flat "brittle" style of snack. I have seen so many brittles for sale lately!

  15. It's really hard to fathom some people's motivations - who on earth would start a fire in the little library?

I've certainly had flops in the kitchen. When we were first married I tried a recipe for Mustard Short Ribs and my new husband told me kindly that I didn't need to bother making that again. I concurred, and I never have.

  16. The Rice Krispy treats look delicious, even if you think they are flat...I would take taste and over beauty any day. I bet the soufflé did taste good.

As for the little library, I do not know what is wrong with people. The county next to us has over 30 covered bridges, and two or three have been set on fire...at least one other vandalized. It is beyond me to understand what joy that brings.

  17. I couldn't believe it when your title said you had a rant, but my goodness, I would have been ranting too! What are people thinking these days? I'm assuming it was kids who just weren't thinking and they will grow out of it. I do with there were some way of finding out. We all need these little acts of kindness right now, like the little libraries. To vandalize it is just horrible.
My Mom had a recipe the family called "Never Fail Fudge" because it failing about 50% of the time for her. We would happily eat it with a spoon though! I usually have good luck with it, although I haven't made it for a few years.
I have never made cinnamon rolls that turned out. Actually any yeast breads usually fail for me.
    Take care,
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  18. I've also had some failures in the kitchen. Sometimes though, those failures might not look good but still taste great. How horrible that someone would burn your books, hard to understand their thinking. :(

  19. How sad that someone would do that to your little library! Just senseless! I've had plenty of fails from online recipes as well. Sometimes I wonder about ingredients, and how perhaps different brands of ingredients could cause a recipe to change. I'm glad at least you were still able to eat your creations! We are having a rainy wet day here... many blessings to you!

  20. People seem to be just plain mean nowdays, doing things just because they can. Probably some younger kids or young adults whose parents didn't give them a whoopin in their younger days when they needed it. I had to ask Jerry if there was something I made that failed and he said he has eaten everything I've ever made lol but I know there's probably something I failed at making but just can't think of it lol.

  21. Vandalism like that drives me crazy. Grrrr.... As to cooking fails, well we had one this morning. Larry cooks a porridge substitute. It has Ceylon cinnamon in it. We had a random bag of spice. After comparing it to all the spices we had, we decided it was Ceylon cinnamon. Larry made the porridge as usual. It tasted awful, a weird sweetness. We don't know what was in that bag, but we couldn't eat the porridge. Another batch had to be made.

  22. You are so funny! I bet even your "failed cakes" are yummy :) The recipe that my mom made when I was a child that I loathed, was cheese souffle. Ugh - just could not STAND either the flavor or the texture. Those bars look good though! Sorry about that library. Your post (I read it last night) about the vandalized truck got our family talking about Canadians and what they are like, haha. Now ... that burnt library is really making me wonder!!!
