March

March came in like a lamb here for us. Beautiful sunshine meant I was outside doing as much as I dared. Youngest is coming by later today to move some heavy things for me,  heavy pots of wet dirt impossible for either of us oldies to budge.  The forecast for tomorrow is equally pleasant.

We had a lovely walk first thing this morning. Saw a muskrat which we know are present in the Creek but hard to spot. It was so nice walking in sunshine and listening to birds singing.

Although this picture is from the internet it looks exactly like what we saw. Not the most handsome of  rodents but really, are any of them good-looking?  Maybe beavers.

In the kitchen I tried a new-to-me recipe that I found in Kirsten's lovely blog__  A Letter from Home. It's for a Welsh tea cake dense with dried fruit and soooo good.  It's called Bara Brith which apparently means mottled bread. I will definitely make this often. Both of us love it...(in fact along with a pot of tea it made my supper last night).
The one I made looked slightly different because the recipe called for currants ( which I dislike) so I used raisins and dried cranberries. I threw in some glaced fruit that had been soaking in rum since Christmas. As you know, I can never stick to a recipe. haha.

That's about it for today. I'm off to enjoy the sunshine.

Thanks for visiting

  1. While I love currants, raisins and cranberries also rock. lololol on the standing up from garden work. Same goes for cutting fabric.

  9. It was pretty cold today in the low 30's with a cold wind so I would say March came in like a baby lion. Not storming, but n to the beautiful weather we had last week either.
    That cake looks delicious.
    Blessings and hugs,

  11. Your loaf looks just like mine, I'm so glad you figured out the quantities. Although I guess they don't have to be too exact, it's a very old traditional welsh recipe so suitable for 1st March, st David's day. I use any old packets of dried mixed fruit, or whatever I've got in the cupboard. Too many currants can make it too sweet for me.

  12. Oh, that sounds absolutely lovely 🌤️ There’s nothing better than March being gentle for once — sunshine, fresh air, and that first real feeling that the garden is waking up again.

I love that you made the most of it while you could. And how sweet that your youngest is coming by to help — those heavy pots of wet soil are no joke! It’s such a good feeling to have a little sunshine and a little help on the same day.

Here’s hoping tomorrow is just as kind and gives you even more time outside. Spring slowly stretching its legs is such a beautiful thing to witness. 🌱✨

  15. With all the beautiful weather we've been having, getting into the garden feels good. And with rain in the forecast here, I was glad to do some work out there on Saturday.
The Bara Brith looks like a hearty loaf and one my husband would enjoy. I'm not fond of cooked raisins or currants!

  16. So glad you were able to get outside and enjoy some fresh air. It is chilly here today but we are forecasted to have warmer temps the remainder of the week. The bread sounds delish with the substitutions you made. I'm not a fan of currants either.

  17. That does look delicious.
It's Monday now, and the laundry is getting done, and Tom is doing bathrooms and vacuuming. A walk in the sunshine is on the schedule for this afternoon.

  20. That cake looks so delicious. I checked out the recipe, but I'm not sure that I will be able to make it. At one time, I did a lot of baking from Paul Hollywood's Baking Book and had made up a recipe of the mixed spice, but I rarely use the book now because of my dietary issues. I'll let you know if I make it. I did pin the recipe to my Pinterest board.

  21. Your bread sounds very like my fruitcake! So delicious.
March came in like a somewhat subdued lion here. Not sure what that portends.
