Another Day, another Walk

Another lovely morning walk. This lavender plant in the parking lot caught my eye.

I counted at least 8 bunnies as we walked. Some were so little and seemed unafraid of us ( until we got too close. Then the hopped away).

I have exactly ONE raspberry bush and this is the first year it has produced any fruit.  The plant was given to me and I plunked it in an empty spot. It really  has grown too big for that spot.

I baked rhubarb muffins and we've been enjoying them with our coffee. Next time I make them I'll make a crumble topping. Or increase the sugar. The rhubarb is quite tart.

I'm glad the information about the dog days of summer didn't bore you. I debated whether to include it.

If I could ask that the ones who comment as anonymous could leave a name or even a nickname ( if you're hesitant to leave your real name). It just seems so impersonal to have it anonymous. I do enjoy reading the comments.

Dog Says of Summer

Happy Sunday !!  It's cool and rainy here today, a pleasant change from the heat we had and most welcome by my flowers!  Our rain barrels were getting very empty and this should help.  We debated whether to walk or not. I'm so glad we opted to go because the air was so fresh and so few people were out walking that we  both had more energy than usual (and managed to extend our walk ).  We rewarded ourselves upon returning.  We had the last of some date squares from the freezer ( I'm sure they were in there a month or more).  Being that old they absolutely needed to be topped with ice cream.

I read this bit earlier and you might be interested, if not just skip it.

The “Dog Days” of summer are from July 3 to August 11 each year. They’re usually the hottest and most unbearable days of the season. We often hear about the “Dog Days” of summer, but few know where the expression originated. Some think it’s a reference to the hot, sultry days that are “not fit for a dog.” Others suggest it’s the time of year when the extreme heat drives dogs mad. But where does the term come from? And what does it have to do with dogs?

The phrase is a reference to Sirius, the Dog Star. During the “Dog Days” period, the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star visible from any part of Earth. Sirius is a part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog.

In the summer, Sirius rises and sets with the Sun. On July 23rd, specifically, it is in conjunction with the Sun, and because the star is so bright, the ancient Romans believed it actually gave off heat and added to the Sun’s warmth, accounting for the long stretch of sultry weather. They referred to this time as diēs caniculārēs, or “dog days.”

Thus, the term Dog Days of Summer came to mean the 20 days before and 20 days after this alignment of Sirius with the Sun—July 3 to August 11 each year.

Canada Day 2022

The sun is shining and we're all set to celebrate today. For many years we've had a family BBQ here and this year is no exception.,  When the kids were young we'd go watch the parade but now we stay home and watch it on FB where someone is sure to post it.

We walked around the lake as usual. Saw a raccoon  hightailing it across the grass towards the lake. Then a noisy bunch of crows ( a murder of them?) alerted us to another raccoon high in a tree. The raccoon didn't seem to mind them as he made himself comfortable and prepared to take a nap.

I did some baking. There was also a cheesecake but it disappeared rather quickly and I didn't get a picture. The top picture is a lemon square.

About that big unattractive (so far) house being built nearby, I'll take a picture once it's done and post it. No doubt that will be in a couple of months.

That's my post for today. It had been close to a week since I last posted. I think those 35*C days might have been to blame.

Happy July 1st to Canadians ( and to those in the U.S. happy July 4th.

Morning Walk

As I walk to the lake I pass by this extremely big house under construction. I don't care for the look of it but maybe once it's finished it will look fine.

The flowers in the park are farther along than mine. Probably because they get more sun.

I hadn't noticed this tree stump before. Whoever cut it took the time to make a 'crown'.

Here's something new in the park. The fountain is up and running. I had taken pictures of it but then I saw  daughter Sheila's picture and I liked hers better. She managed to get Mt Baker in the background.

Thanks for coming by. I hope you have a lovely Sunday.

Summer Weather

After days ( weeks) of cloudy days often with rain we have gone from this....

...to this!  Blue sky with lovely summer clouds.

We got strawberries for a very good price at the grocery store. The berries were not local but very soon we'll have those available. Now it really does seem like Summer.

In the garden the peonies are about done but so many other flowers are coming into bloom.

Needless to say I'm spending as much time as possible enjoying the sunshine. The forecast is for temperatures in the 30's for the weekend so I'll be doing some baking today and not using the oven when it's so warm.  Whatever your plans are for the weekend I hope you enjoy it.

Summer Solstice 2022

The June solstice marks the official beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. As the Farmer's Almanac explains, it occurs when Earth arrives at the point in its orbit where the North Pole is at its maximum tilt — about 23.5 degrees — toward the sun.

After a busy weekend and an equally busy Monday I'm ready for a quiet evening.  It was another mostly cloudy day as the next 2 days will be  but then, if the forecast holds, we're in for some sunshine. The strawberries which have been just waiting for the sun should ripen quite quickly. In the tiny raised bed garden my lettuce has done well and we've had several salads already. This picture was taken a couple of weeks ago.

That's my very short post today.  Thanks for coming by,  GM

A Failed Recipe

I tried a new recipe yesterday. Impossible Chocolate Pie. I like those Impossible pies both savoury and sweet and I've never had one fail. Until now. This is how it should look ( with a brief description from the internet.)

Chocolate Impossible Pie is a wedge of dense chocolate indulgence that couldn’t be easier. Simply whirl the pantry-friendly ingredients in a blender, pour into the pie dish and bake!

This is what mine looked like.  And yes, I followed the recipe.

It's edible but disappointing.

I picked up 2 books that I had requested at the library. They're the ones on the right. The other 2 I picked up at the thrift store.  Hopefully these will not disappoint. I have read others by Elizabeth Hay and Ann Cleeves. The other authors are new to me but reading the blurbs they sounded interesting.

It's another day of overcast skies but no rain so I will work outside cutting back some overenthusiastic Shasta Daisies that are crowding the roses.  Youngest son is coming over later and will do some digging for me.

Have a pleasant weekend.   GM
