Miss Read

Some books are so comforting. In times of stress and upsets such as we are now living through I find solace in reading about simpler times. Gladys Taber is one of those kind of authors,  and also Dora Saint, better known as Miss Read.  She wrote about the things she held dear: the passing seasons, good friendships, village life.  Her main character is a teacher in a village school, much like the author was before her marriage.  On the anniversary of her death I thought I'd mention her. Maybe you're already familiar with her books. If so, let me know in a comment.

Dora Saint was born on April 17, 1913 and died on April 7, 2012... just ten days before her 99th birthday.

Thanks for visiting,

Granny Marigold

  1. I loved Miss Read's books. I must have read them 2 or 3 times; finally donated them to our library before our move. Then, wouldn't you know, once we were settled, I missed those books so much, I bought the whole series again and enjoyed them all over again.

  4. I love Miss Green! I have quite a number of Fairacre and Thrush Green books - I stocked up when they were randomly available new in bookstore bargain bins here in New Zealand a few years ago. No longer alas. I might see if I can download some onto my kindle app - the ultimate comfort read.

  5. I hadn't heard of Miss Read, but her books sound good. I did a library search and they have several audio books of hers and a couple of hardcover books, although I will have to wait for our libraries to reopen before I can access them. Mxx

  10. I agree that certain books bring comfort at this time. I have been a fan of both of those authors for years. I still have a collection of Gladys Taber books. Most of my Miss Read books were passed to others when I moved. Not because I didn't enjoy them, just had to be selective in this house with no bookcases.

    1. More than 40 in all. Most are out of print unfortunately. I'd love to find the ones I'm missing and always look for them.

  20. I love Miss Read books. (Have you tried her "Thrush Green" series? Not quite as good as the Fairacre series, but still wonderful!) I read many of her books years ago when I was homeschooling. I own two of them and have read them many times. It's sometimes hard for me to find her books in the library, sad to say. I wish!
