Coots

3C with no wind this morning. The ice on the lake is beginning to thaw.  We saw lots of coots by the water, more than usual but fewer Canada Geese and ducks.

Coots are such strange looking birds. They look and behave much like a duck but their feet are not webbed. Instead they have  long flat lobed toes. This picture from the internet makes the toes look  gray but they are more greenish. When M was little he said their feet were the colour of celery.  LOL.

It's a day off work for a lot of people on this Family Day Monday. For retired people it doesn't make a lot of difference.  I, of course, am doing laundry.  We have a quiet week ahead. I foresee lots of reading time. When the library opens tomorrow I'll go pick up the book I had requested ( another Ann Cleeves mystery).

Thanks for coming by.

  4. I always like seeing coots from a distance on a body of water, but I didn't know that about their feet.

It definitely looks cold in your area! Here it is overcast and cold, but not nearly to the degree you are experiencing. It's just that without the sun, it seems gloomy. I need to go build a cozy fire right now!

  13. Coots are very interesting birds. We see them here, too. It's nice that the snow is melting, but I rather miss the clear sunny cold and dry days.
