The Day After

The ice storm caused a lot of problems including many power outages. We had our generator running during the first outage but later we had another that lasted all night during which time we just put on as many layers as we could and went to bed.
. We went for a walk this morning to see what damage the storm had done in the park and were appalled to see many trees broken down from the sheer weight of the ice.

Hard as it is to believe the tiny Hummingbird that hangs around all winter is still alive. A neighbour has a feeder with a light bulb hanging right beside to keep the sugar water from freezing and I think that without that nourishment the little bird wouldn't survive the icy temperatures we have had.

My DIL took these first two photos and the last two I found on the internet. The devastation to the trees in the last picture is like what we saw in the park this morning.  Our old Lilac bush which is probably close to 20 ft. has bent over completely and hopefully won't actually break. So far not much ice has melted but hopefully temperatures will rise soon.

Thanks for visiting on this last day of the year.   Have a safe New Year's Eve!

  2. Horrible isn't it. We have been without power since lunchtime Friday. A massive tree is perched across our driveway. We were trapped for a while but with the help of a chainsaw are now able to drive under it. There will be pictures when we get our power and internet back. My 'Anna' visits daily, and I took that exact picture today. The ice is pretty but dangerous

  4. Poor sweet little hummingbird. Glad he had a place to feed. What an ice storm! Hope it warms up enough there to melt some and hope your lilac bush (tree) doesn't break.

  5. Wow! We have been having some freezing rain and slick roads but not anything like that. I am assuming that your power is back on or you couldn't be posting . . . but then again if you post on your phone or tablet, I guess that you could. Here's wishing you NO MORE POWER OUTS this winter. Stay warm sweet friend and Happy New Year!

  8. During our last severe ice storm, I heard trees cracking and snapping and crashing all night long. I called it the night of the screaming trees. And then there were weeks of clean up.

  11. Goodness you've had a bad time of it weatherwise! Here it is just frigidly cold making us all want to hole up indoors, happy that we don't have to venture out although some parts of our area were without hydro too in -40C windchills. Glad to hear that your little hummer survived! Hopefully you don't have to venture out on the icy conditions (maybe it will be melting by now?) What a way to end the year!
    Wishing you all the best,
    Ellabie

  12. Oh wow! That looks like quite an ice storm! It always hurts seeing trees weighed down with ice and getting damaged.

I had no idea any hummingbirds would stick around during winter. Hope it survives.

    Happy New Year!

  13. That looks like quite the storm, hope the damage to the trees is limited and that they can recover. Best wishes for 2018.

  14. Our power was on before bed time both nights, thankfully. It looks like the trees (or what's left of them) are still iced over today... you might have to get out in your yard with a blow dryer and a long, long extension cord!!
