Cleaning up

I've been inspired by Kate ( The Last Homely House  on YouTube) to do more tidying up and getting rid of "stuff" no longer wanted nor needed.  Those who watch her videos know she has not been well for the last 6 weeks but slowly she's getting her energy back. Her most recent post has to do with sorting through her clothes. She intends to sort out all her things in the next weeks.

So, the boxes in the back of the pick-up show some of the results of my efforts. Tomorrow we'll go drop them off at the thrift store. Yes, I'll go in and most certainly will look at books.

Are you clearing out any of your stuff these days? It seems to be an ongoing chore. If you have any helpful ideas to make it easier please share them.

  1. Clearing out stuff does seem to be an ongoing chore. I have been working on it all year! I have made progress but need to go back and cut a little deeper. The more I clean, the easier it gets.

  2. Great job cleaning things out. I also watch Kate but have bee unable to due to the move and not having enough internet. to watch videos. I didn't know Kate was sick. Can you tell what is wrong?
Take care and remember that strife happeneds in families, but where you love each other and are strving for the same goals it should work.
    Blessings,

  3. I always made for the books first when I visited a thrift shop but now try to avoid them because I always ended up buying at least one! :)

  4. Since our move here to the Island three years when we downsized and had an enormous clear out we have been mindful about bringing things in.

  5. I've been going through cupboards here and had my car trunk completely full last week. I don't cook much with it just being the two of us here and very seldom having visitors. I dropped it all off at the thrift store, went around to the front and found six books I hadn't read. This week I am going through all my clothes. I will donate those to the battered women's shelter. It feels good to know I'm getting things we don't need out of the house and they can be used by someone who does need them.

  6. Hi GM- It is good to have a clean out to clear away unwanted items - I tend to do this and use e-Bay to make some cash out of the clear out - mostly Hobby items which do sell. Have a great Weekend there. Best Wishes. KEV.

  8. Clearing out is a continual thing, I've found. It's good to go through closets and cupboards regularly. I don't have any tips - but it sure feels good when things behind doors are tidy. The used book section is where I like to go in thrift stores, too.

  9. Funny you should ask. We just took a whole pickup truck full of scrap metal and aluminum to the junk yard today!!

  10. Good work! Good place in the car to bring the stuff away!

For me it is hard to throw something away - my mother always said: keep it good, because you never know, what times will bring. She was surviving the second world-war and had the experience to leave Dresden with nothing than a baby in her body....

But I have a fine son, my youngest, who sometimes helps me to throw away anything I do not need actual. Thanks goodness :) :) :) But a few thing I must save. It is not good, I say to my son, to throw too much away, because a house also can be a valuable place to find resources! :)

  11. I have not caught the sorting bug, or the deep cleaning. I did do a lot of sorting and donating two years ago.

  12. I still haven't got my closets done, which I've been waiting for for a year and a half now. I do a lot of rummaging through the boxes and piles of stored things that I've been moving from room to room, looking for one thing, and always running across some other thing that I had forgotten about or that I now know I didn't need for all that time. So I am nearly every day adding to the give-away collection. Just today two friends helped me do a dozen tasks all over the place, and the last one they did was to take away two more boxes to donate. I was so glad when the thrift stores started taking donations again!! For months my planned donations were still taking up space on the property.

  13. I should get back at it! I have a mountain of boxes upstairs with stuff all marked for a garage sale that didn't happen because of COVID....maybe next summer. :)

  14. Recently I had to rearrange the furniture in my studio/office. In the process, I had to clear off a very high top shelf, and I realized that almost nothing on the shelf was anything I needed to keep, or even wanted. I gave it all away! It felt really good. I'm gonna go check out her channel :)
