In the Kitchen

Thank you everyone for all the good wishes for my injured hand. It's still swollen ( when I fell I landed on it) but I'm able to do most everything now.
Just before the day I fell I had bought quite a bit of fruit which needed to be dealt with.  DH offered to do the work and all I had to do was tell him what to do. Hmmm. What's not to like about that?\

Knowing how often peaches that look good don't have much taste I only bought a few. Good thing, since they were not at all tasty. Not wanting to throw them out DH had the great idea to make rhubarb/peach jam. It's a strange combination but quite good.

We had also just bought another 20lb box of cherries.  I was able to wash them using my left hand and between the two of us we got those in the freezer.

A bag of apples that were marked down at Walmart needed using up and DH peeled and chopped while I got out the ingredients for apple pies. I wanted one with a top crust while he opted for one with crumble topping. Since he's the one who usually makes the pie crust around here that went just fine. The last apples became apple crisps ( in the ramekins).  Needless to say we're still not done eating all this!

So that's what we've been doing while making sure we take time to sit outside on the porch and enjoy the August sunshine.

Thanks for coming by,  G.M.

  1. Yum! I'm looking forward to when the apples are ready for harvest around here. There's the one farm we love to go to that grows SO many varieties, more than 25 these days, but mostly Gravensteins. Do you have that variety up there? They ripen earlier than any other local apple.

If I succumb to the lure, I'll have to figure out what I can cook to give away. You are blessed to have several people happy to cook and/or eat all those goodies!

  3. Do you freeze cherries with the pits in? If so, then how do you use them?

  5. Wow....you put all that fruit to great use! How ambitious you are. I'm glad you had a willing helper there! I'd like a piece of that pie right about now and even a smidgen of your peach/rhubarb jam! Glad your hand is starting to feel better!

  6. Glad to hear that you are on the mend and obviously back to your many projects! So what do you use the frozen cherries for? And do you pit them before freezing? I hope to get a box of peaches this week - like you mentioned, just because they look good doesn't mean they have great taste so it's always a gamble to buy a 22 pound box.

  7. You have been missed and it's SO good to see you posting again. I'm glad to read that you're doing better but sorry that your hand is still swollen. It's wonderful that you have such a handy helper in the kitchen...and he makes the pie crusts? He is a keeper for sure. :-). Everything looks so good and delicious. Especially the apple treats. I love apples in just about any form.
    Blessings,

  9. Hi GM...Glad to hear that your Hand is mending and your getting back to normal use again. You know when I think of Apple Pie I remember my Grand Mother (Annie Robertson) making Apple Pie using a Wood Fuel Stove...served with cream -so delightful. That was back in 1960 and I guess using a Wood Burning Stove is a lost Art by now. Stay well and safe. Regards. KEV. (Sydney- Australia).

  17. I have been wondering how you were making it. I figured you would post soon as you were able. I could help you with the apple pies/crisps. As would Roger...LOL I would love to know what it is with the peaches sometimes...every now and then we have gotten some that are almost like taking a bite of cotton balls...that texture and not taste.

  18. Annnnnnd now I'm hungry. 🤣 I've bought a handful of peaches a couple times recently and they just didn't have any flavor. People have said that just seems to be the case this year unfortuantely. But your apple goodies sure do look tasty!
