Gladys Taber April 12, 1899- March 1980

Every year I post about dear Gladys Taber on her birthday. I know many of you know her books and have enjoyed reading about her beloved Stillmeadow.  Her books are so hard to find now. I am fortunate enough to own a few and find they are so comforting to read and reread in a world that can seem senseless at times.

The following quotation from one of her books is one of my favourites.

There is, I have found, at least one good or lovely thing in each day.
Everyone has sorrow, endures difficult times, but loveliness abides if we look for it.

Life is not, for most of us, a pageant of splendor but is made up of many small things,  rather like an old-fashioned piecework quilt.

Do you have a favourite author whose books you reread from time to time?  I think Rosamunde Pilcher's books are also treasures. Do you know she's going to be 94 this year?

Thanks for visiting again,

    1. I do hope you're able to find any of her books at your library. As far as I know they are out of print now.

    2. You can sometimes find a used copy of one of Gladys Taber’s books through Amazon. I am reading”The Best of Stillmeadow” now and am absolutely charmed.

  4. My mother introduced me to Gladys Taber's books and I have always loved them. I have several and you've inspired me to get them out and read through them again!

  5. Sad to say I'm not the reader I used to be, I still enjoy reading reviews and comments about the books my friends read. I enjoyed the quote.

  6. I finally bought 4 of Taber's books several years ago because blogging friends loved her so. They were wonderful books, and I hope to reread them. I don't necessarily have authors that I reread, but I do have a selection of books that I do.

  7. I think I borrowed a couple books from a friend and read them a few years ago. Is she the author from Indiana or wrote about Indiana. it has been awhile. Nancy

  8. Jan Karon's books fill that spot for me, along with Miss Reed. Picking up one of their books is like visiting an old friend.

  9. I've certainly read most of Rosamund Pilcher's books, but I don't know if I have read any of Gladys Taber. That is a great quote, I will have to see if I can find some of her books.

  10. I don't own one of her books, and I need to change that! However, what a beautiful quote you shared, and I so agree. Life is not about the big things, but the patchwork of moments that make up our days into special moments and memories. I will be on the lookout for her books at thrift stores now :)

  11. I still have my mom's old Family Circle magazines that she kept. 15 cents at the grocery store. She read us the Stillmeadow articles. I picture in my mind the skating pond, the fireplace, and the wet, smelly dogs running into the house with the kids at suppertime. It was heaven.

    1. You have got some treasures there. While looking up GT's books on Amazon last night I noticed that someone had an old copy of Family Circle magazine ( containing GT's column) that they wanted $5.99 for.

  12. Oh that is a very good quote! I'm a Gladys fan too and have a couple of her dear books that I love to read through the seasons. I like to read Gene Stratton Porter, Elizabeth Goudge, and Bess Streeter Aldrich.

  13. I haven't read any of Rosamunde Pilcher's books. (Did she write The Shell Seekers? I've seen the movie.) But I have read several of Gladys Taber's (which I donated to the library book sale later, gasp!). I did like them, but I don't reread things a lot. And sometimes I feel the need to make space on my shelves. I also love Miss Read and I've probably read most of her books. Have you read any of Beverley Nichols' books? Lots of gardening and old English house stuff. But maybe hard to find. Great quote!

    1. Yes, she did write The Shell Seekers. I also saw the movie and I thought Angela Lansbury did an excellent job of portraying Penelope Keeling.
I must look for Beverley Nichols books at the library.
