Chilly Day

It's a wet and chilly day. I know I've mentioned numerous times how very dry it has been. Well, these past 3 days we've had so much rain, at times so heavy that the water ran straight over the edge of the roof missing the gutters completely.  It seemed a good day to bake so I got bread dough started in the bread maker and began to make a date square ( matrimonial square to some). DH has always loved anything made with dates but I wasn't as fond of them as he. Then I started putting  dried cranberries and/or raisins in with the dates. It's much more to my liking now.

I did pop into the thrift store this morning but found very little. Just one  cup and a pretty saucer. Just as well since I'm running out of space.

On the weekend I found these interesting looking bulbs at Walmart. Does anyone know anything about them?  I did look them up and they seem easy enough to grow so I'll plant them and see what comes up next Spring.  They're related to Alliums and I've had no luck getting those to grow and bloom.  Maybe these will be hardier.  I do think that many bulbs simply rot during our very wet Winters.

Almost time to think about making supper.  A pot of vegetable soup would go very nicely with the freshly baked bread.

I hope you had a good day!

Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment so I know you came by.

  1. Just found your blog recently. Really like it! I love date anything too! Glad you figured out a way that you can like it too. Vegetable soup and homemade bread sounds good too. Wish I lived closer! Love your tea cups and saucers too. I haven't seen bulbs like that....hope they grow for you!

  4. You found some more pretty items. Those flower bulbs by the picture look so pretty. I do hope they will grow for you. We had quite a bit of rain too last week. Then it dried up some and now more rain expected. The trees are dropping yellow leaves across the grass.

  5. I had wonderful blooms on my purple alliums the first year, and was very disappointed when only a couple returned the following year. It may be that we are too wet for them here. We'll see what your new bulb does.

  8. Glad you found a way to enjoy dates. Your squares look yummy to me.
I am not familiar with that flower, but it sure looks pretty. I hope you have success with it and will update us here next spring.

  9. I have never heard of those flowers either. I have never tried alium and love them...got some bulbs day before yesterday and hope they do good. I also got some Fritilaria I think is how it is spelled...I have never seen it so wondering how it will do. It is not as if I keep my flowerbeds clean...I always thought that someday I would have time to have pretty flowers, and now that I can, it is heck for to get up and down since my fall, and have to be so very careful with the other knee. I have to have padding under it or I cannot be down at all.

The saucer and teacup are both so very pretty.

  10. A pot of soup and warm baked goods are just perfect for a wet day. Our weather is finally turning cooler too - I hope yours is as well. I've never seen those flowers before; it will be fun to see how they do over winter.

  13. Date squares are one of my all time favorite!
I have to be so very careful in making them or I will eat the whole pan as my husband does not care for them.

We had beef vegetable soup this evening with yeast dinner rolls, yum!

    Joy to you ♡

  14. Vegetable soup, fresh bread and date square - perfect fall meal. Like you, we've had so much rain, one thunderstorm after another with almost 4 inches of rain on Friday. Even the lawn feels squishy when you walk on it. Chris

  15. My mother used to buy a date bar mix in a box, and we often made those date bars when I was young. I loved them, but have never tried making them from scratch. I wonder if I still have the recipe I found once. Your baking often gives me ideas!
