Some Baking and Fall Cleaning

Yesterday I took advantage of a cool morning to do some baking. When we went apple picking I saw in the little store at that U-pick farm that they sell pies, frozen and unbaked, for 10.95 for a 2-crust pie and a dollar more for the crumble topping. Very briefly I was tempted but then I thought about how horrified my Mennonite ancestors would be if I paid such a price for A PIE.  All this to say I made an apple pie with crumble topping  and it is delicious, if I say so myself. I also made cherry crisps in ramekins . That little bit on the plate was just using up the remainder of the pie dough.

Does anyone else cook up pie filling then let it cool before dumping it into the raw pie crust?  I always do that but haven't heard of anyone else who does.

The only other thing out of the ordinary yesterday was cleaning the gutters and soffits on the east side of the house. They were very dirty and youngest son had no trouble at all power washing them.   So good to get that done before winter.

It's Labour Day weekend in Canada. Not that that makes much difference to us retired ones. Every weekend is a long weekend or maybe I should say life is now one long long weekend. I'm not complaining. I find lots of things to fill my days.

Thanks for visiting today,

I hope you're enjoying a lovely peaceful Sunday.   G.M.

  1. It's Labor Day weekend here too. That means Dennis has tomorrow off of work and that's always nice. Hopefully only one more year until retirement.
I usually use the leftover pie dough to make cinnamon chips. You roll out the extra dough and then brush melted butter on top and sprinker with cinnamon and suger. Yum! Your pie looks delicious.

  3. Your cake and pies look really delicious! I'm not experienced in making pie, it's not a usual custom here in Bavaria -

I wonder what kind of weather this winter will bring. Do you have a lot of snow in the winter? Sometimes we have, but last year we did not have any snow in the villages.

It's fine to have good sons helping for the duties of a house. Congratulations!

  5. Your pie looks so delicious. It is a long time since I made a pie and I have always used raw fruit for the filling. I am feeling inspired now to make a pie and try cooking the filling first :)
Hope you have a very pleasant Sunday, Mxx

  10. Glad to hear you had some cooler temps GM. I baked an apple pie not too long ago. I cooked my filling but have done it both ways. Guess it just depends on what strikes me that day! LOL! Happy Labor day. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  11. I'm with you! I love the looong weekend of retirement! I bet your pies are much better than the ones in the shop, lol. I used to bake a lot of pies, but now it's just on Thanksgiving. They look fantastic! Good to have those handy men about the place, eh?

  13. Love apple pies. I don't cook the filling, just cut up apples, then put sugar, cinnamon, and butter on top.

  14. I was just thinking about how good an apple pie would taste right about now. Yours look so tempting. I have not made the filling ahead. How nice to have your gutters cleaned. It is always a good feeling when those jobs are done. So nice that your son was able to tackle that one.

  17. I kept forgetting that it was Labor Day! I wondered why children were home! I clipped and pulled out plants that can't go on when the current cold front peaks. Today it is COLD!
    Take care, good GM!

  18. I love your barn photos for your heading! I always enjoy seeing all the barns we pass by when we get a chance to drive on country roads. Every day seems like a long weekend to us right now. I bought a small apple pie for Jerry and I to share yesterday, it was soooo delicious and a very nice change to have a treat for once. When I used to bake pies I just poured the homemade filling into the crust and baked it altogether. I learned to do it that way from my mama when I was little. Blessings!
