Thrifty Buys

It was a windy and wet day here. I managed to walk in spite of the weather and got a little wet. Mostly my feet.

My DH wanted to go to the thrift store to look for something he needed and of course I went long. I found this curious item which was only .20 . I know it's a type of hanger but why would anyone go to the trouble of sewing the unusual cover. The fabric is upholstery thickness and there is a zipper on one side. Any guesses?

I also bought 2 small items. A pretty dish that I will use as a spoon rest .....

And a Winter/Christmas plate that was marked down from $3 to a dollar.  In December I'll make good use of it.

I can hear the wind throwing the rain against the house. I wish the big old tree on the lot behind us would fall and land in the empty lot to the west side. Whenever we have high winds I worry about it landing on our house. It's only a matter of time until it falls. A 3 story medical building is going to be built on that lot ( plus 2 more adjacent lots) and when they finally begin building we believe they'll take down any tall trees that are a menace. Not that we're looking forward to the noise of construction so near to us.

Thanks for visiting!!  G.M.

  1. The hanger is to keep your clothes pins in on the clothesline My great grandma used to have one. They work great!

  3. You found some great things at the thrift store but I'm. not sure about the hanger. I have a clothepin bag for the clothesline and mine is much deeper than that. It's fun, whatever it might be.

  4. Hi GM- I like your Plates. Our neighbor has a rather large Gum Tree- every storm we think it'l come down and wipe out his house...just wish he would get it cut down to be on the safe side. Any chance of you putting up a photo of DH's Tractor Collection? Best Wishes. Regards. KEV.

  5. Now I learned something about clothes pins! :)

    Nice decorations you found!

We also had a big tree in our garden. Last autumn we had to cut him (I dont say IT, because he was a personality). But he was inside soft and was dying. The tree-worker said, the next storm will come, and this tree will fall anywhere - - After a few weeks there came a heavy storm - -

Stay sheltered and happy, - - many greetings from the Bavarian Forest, wild weather will come tomorrow here.

  6. Love your finds. Granny used to have a bag sorta like that one that she too kept her clothes pins in. Seemed she had a larger one. But it would be perfect for smaller items. OOH, that spoon rest is so pretty! Hugs and blessings, Cindy

  9. Pretty plates, love those vintage finds. I go once in a while, and always end up with at least one item. The last trip yielded me 3, couldn't pass ups. One I actually was looking for, that doesn't happen often. You changed you header pictures lovely for the fall.

  10. I thought maybe to put something smelly in...lavender sachets...but the zipper is so low down it makes no sense. It makes no sense for clothes pins either. It would not hold very many. My mom used to have something sort of similar, but it was longer and she put her stockings in it. And it just hung in the closet. Picture a little dress with the skirt about 8 or ten inches long...the bottom of the skirt part was sewn together making a pocket.

    This is just curious...

    1. Some people put jewelry or money in that type hanger and put it in the closet with the rest of the hanging clothes so it wouldn't be so easy to find by a burglar.

  11. I really like the dish and plate, I have a weakness for pretty dishes!

  12. I thought at first it was a peg bag due to the shape, but not sure why you would have a zipper. Was it for jewellery maybe?

  13. I have a hanger much like yours but the zipper is higher up and the fabric is a quilting cotton whereas you said yours is a heavy one. Mine was advertised for use in hotels when you travel to keep your important papers and/or jewelry in - hidden but in plain view, so to speak.

    1. Did you make me one once, Ellabie? I have one (which I still use) and I always attributed it to you!

  14. Seems to me that the hanger would be too small for clothes pins. If it was bigger it might be good though.
Your two little plates that you bought are pretty!

  15. oh fun! you find such nice things! I love spoon rests and the Christmas plate is very nice! I can totally see some clothes pins in that zippered part of the hanger!

  16. Great finds (love the plates) but that hanger is a mystery. I agree with Rose, that the zipper is really in the wrong place. My grandmother had a bag like this (higher zipper) that she used to put her knickers and stockings in, ready to be washed. Her clothes peg bag was deeper and opened near the top, without a zipper. Both items were handmade and decorated with embroidery, they used to fascinate me :)

  17. My mom said that it was a very rainy day today. I hope the tree does fall the other way so you don't have to worry about it this winter.
I hope your DH found what he needed at the thrift store, too!

  18. I don't know about that hanger, but I like the two dishes you found, and such a good price. I walked in the thrift store today but didn't have much luck. I did buy one book by Jan Karon, one I've never seen before. Can't remember the name of it right now...I put it in the bookcase. :) It was one of the Mitford Series.

  21. A pocket for jewelry to go with a gown hung on the hanger that is my guess. You had a good trip to the thrift store:)

  22. The hanger is used to store belts and other small items that go with clothing. It can also be used to put scented sachets in to freshen the closet. It is very pretty! Dead trees are always scary and I hope the construction work goes quietly and quickly

  23. I've never seen a hanger like that. It wouldn't hold all of my clothespins! I love your thrift store finds.

  24. Several of my Mennonite ancestors apparently made clothes hanger covers for various reasons, some had zippers, some didn't. One was just decorative use for hanging pretty dresses. Another was purely for keeping the old type wire hangers from tearing clothing or rusting onto the fabric and ruing clothes. I remember my mama (not a Mennonite descendant) making some as per my Gramma Buller's (Mennonite descendant) hand-drawn patterns and adding scent or just using it for pretty hanging. I guess use just depended on who you were, hu. Blessings!

  25. Definitely a hanger "security bag" for small valuables for home or travel use. They were popular DIY gifts in the 80s and 90s. Not really secure, but a layer to deter or slow down a thief.

I may have made a few over the years. ;-) Also made coordinating laundry and shoe bags.

The two dishes you bought are lovely. I've been thinking about a spoon rest, but tend to use a saucer or small plate as needed. I'm not much of a shopper, but I'll keep my eyes open when I am out and about. :-)
