Susan Branch and Leaves

Do you enjoy Susan Branch's books and blog?  I noticed that her last two or three posts have been about Autumn and the beauty of leaves.  I've been noticing lately too what lovely colours our trees have turned.    I wish I could name each colour  and I happened to mention this to my eldest daughter. This is the 'chart' she created for me.  The colour names are almost as lovely as the leaves themselves. Take Alizarin Crimson..(that's the one in the upper right hand corner). Wikipedia tells me that it is a shade of red biased slightly more toward purple than orange. Then there's Burnt Orange, Burnt Sienna, and Yellow Ochre....

Back to Susan Branch. In her October 21 post she gives the recipe for Snippy Doodle coffeecake which sounds so fast and easy and tasty that I'm going to make it soon. After we finish the apple pie that we made for supper today.  DH helped ( in fact I think he did more than I did) and since it's not much more work to make a full recipe of pie dough, we now have 4 fine lumps of dough in the freezer for the next time we want pie.

Time to stop rambling on here.  Thanks for coming by,  G.M.

  1. What a lovely thing your daughter did for you to make that chart. How fun to be able to compare it to the leaves!
I have read some of Susan Branches books but I didn't know about her blog. I may need to look it up. Thanks for telling us about it.
    Blessings,

  2. How I love these colours! A wonderful list! Did you paint it yourself?

Really: The colour-list is as beautiful as the leaves. Some of these colours I have in my painting-box. I have "Alizarin Crimson" and I love it for paintings very much, also the colours "Burnt Orange, Burnt Sienna, and Yellow Ochre...."

I do not know every name of your list-colours, but I'm so impressed!

Cake with apples are very actual now. Mmmmmmmm!

  6. The autumn leaves this year have been so brilliant and beautiful. What a lovely idea for your daughter to give the paint colours that match the leaves. I do enjoy Susan Branch's blog and have her story books (but not the most recent Christmas one). Have a good day enjoying that Snippy Doodle cake!

  10. Yes, I occasionally read Susan Branch's blog and do enjoy it tremendously but I am not faithful enough in keeping up. I do love your color chart and the names! Our leaves are of course long gone or covered with snow. I look forward to hearing how the new recipe turned out! I baked my first pan of "Christmas" baking today - Carmelitas, a family favorite though not sure if we'll get to see our family due to Covid restrictions. Thankfully it freezes well.

  11. I have three of Susan Branch's books which I have enjoyed so much. I love her hand lettered pages which are illustrated with her own little drawings. Your daughter's color study page is wonderful.

  13. Yes, I do enjoy Susan Branch's books and blog. I have several of her books and am very tempted by her newest Christmas book. She is so talented and her blog is such a happy spot to visit.
The color chart your daughter created for you is wonderful. I will be looking at the fall colors through new eyes now. I guess I didn't realize there were so many different shades and the names are lovely.
I hope you'll report back to us on the Snippy Doodle.

  14. It's so rare that there's something I can do for my mother and the color chart was a pleasure to make, although if I'd known she would insist on keeping the first draft I would have been more meticulous lol
