A Pie and a lot of Bananas

I decided to make a cherry/berry pie yesterday using a can of cherry pie filling and some frozen berries that we had.  I had the pie dough ready to roll out and I thought I'd turn on the oven and let it preheat while I finished up making the pie.  There was a big flash and flames then just a glowing element on the bottom of the oven. If you've ever had an element burn out you'll know how shocking it can be.
I was able to bake the pie in my DIL's oven but until we get a new element I can't use my oven obviously.

Friday means grocery shopping for us. There were specials at 2 different stores and I bought quite a few bananas for .33 lb at the first store  then we went on to the second one and they were giving away lovely bunches of bananas! What could I do but say thanks and take one. The picture below is of the free ones. I think once we get the oven fixed I'll be making Banana loaves!!

We're enjoying an unexpectedly nice day with sunshine and 8*C. I think I'll go wander around outside and dream of what I'll do when the ground thaws and it's warm enough to actually putter out there.

Thanks for coming to visit today,  GM

  1. Well, pie makes me happy! And hyacinths. And I bought primroses today for my porch pots. I didn't quite get my gardening done before the rain returned, but tomorrow is another day.

  2. Free bananas! That was great. Your pie looks delicious, but what a shock to have your oven blow. Hope you can get it mended soon.

  3. Elements going kaput are alarming! We just had to have the computer part of the stove replaced. Everything working perfectly, but the computer said "no, no good, I won't turn on." Now hubby understands why I wanted a vintage stove! Wink!

  6. I can only imagine how shocking that would be. I'm so sorry about your oven and I'm glad you were able to do your baking anyway. That's a BUNCH of banana's! I love banana bread and now I want to get some banana's and make some myself. We're supposed to have above freezing temps for the next week or so. Maybe some of this snow will disappear. We would all like that around here. I hope you have a blessed and safe weekend.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  9. The pie looks scrumptious! And I hope your heating element is fixed soon! You asked me what a Caribou is on my blog. It's a coffee shop like Starbucks. Maybe a more local thing? My daughter always says she needs a "Boo" when we go to town. :)

  10. Bet is scared when the element went out. The pie looks so delicious. We're having a day of sunshine too and I've been outside dreaming and planning. It's still 27 degrees and very windy...but we have sun!! I'm so thankful!!

  12. This cake looks so fine! But the story arond the cake is an adventure! Thank goodness you could finish your cake!

Free bananas! Incredible! I hope your oven will be repaired soon, so you can make fine bananabread - -

We also have fine early-spring-sun after some very cold time. All people and animals sit in the sun! But he nights still are cold, so the flowers will have to wait - -

  13. No, I have never had an element make a noise and go out...maybe that is what happened with my one oven. I was baking bread and did not set a timer...and it burned. I thought well, maybe I got mixed up on the time, and proceeded to make another pan of cornbread and this time I sat a timer...i smelled it burning before the time was up. Tried to turn the stove off, and it would not turn off. I had Roger go turn off the switch in the electircal box. So we did that. And then he turned it back on and told me to turn the stove on, and it popped real loud.

But we got rid of that stove...it was almost new, and I feel sure I smelled the coating of wires melting...I had a headache like you wouldn't believe.

  14. So sorry about your oven. We just had to replace our stove because the oven wasn't working and it was going to cost almost as much as we paid for the stove to have it repaired. Free bananas? Yes, please! I would take as many as they wanted to give me and freeze them to make muffins or bread. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  16. Oh my, that oven would have given you a fright. We had one years ago that had flames shoot out the side of it as it sort of exploded and stopped working. I can still remember the terror of it! I hope you can get yours fixed soon (we had to get a new oven). Take care, Mxx

  17. You could make banana pudding! I think there are recipes for that, that don't require an oven. You can use vanilla wafers for the crust, etc. I hope your oven is back to its usual job soon!
