My Christmas Cactus is re-blooming! From what I understand it is a Thanksgiving Cactus not a Christmas Cactus at all. Apparently the same plant sold as a Thanksgiving one in the U.S. will be sold as a Christmas one here in Canada because we celebrate our Thanksgiving in early October and by the time our plant blooms it's late November and we're thinking Christmas.
All this still doesn't explain why it's blooming now. There is an Easter variety but its leaves are so different there's no confusing it with the Thanksgiving one.
Holiday Cacti originated in the rain forests of Brazil with warmth, humidity and indirect light so successfully growing them is quite different from ordinary Cacti. Those desert plants need far less water and more light (preferably sunlight). So the East window where my Cacti grows ( next to a fern that gets spritzed often) is ideal.

It's so pretty!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly looks healthy!
ReplyDeleteMine haven't bloomed yet - I have quite a few I propagated, in the greenhouse, and they maybe didn't get enough darkness last winter? I never know what to expect from them.
This is a coincidence as I have only been reading about Christmas Cactus today as I have a little one given away by my local florist during this lockdown. I read apparently if they are very happy with were they are thay can bloom a few times a year. Looking at your lovely plant gives me a real incentive to care carefully for my little one.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I guess it doesn't know how to read a calendar! ;-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a green thumb you have. Even your Thanksgiving cactus wanted to greet Easter Day!
ReplyDeleteOne of our big, old Christmas cacti has a few new blooms on it too. Also in an east window. Plants are fun.
ReplyDeleteA wonder and miracle and sign from heaven special for you in this spiritual time around Easter! CONGRATULATIONS!
ReplyDeleteYour Thanksgiving cactus is beautiful! You really do have a green thumb.
ReplyDeleteOh what pretty colored flowers on your cactus. I don't think I've seen that color before. It almost looks apricot! How pretty. It's welcoming Spring and Easter!
ReplyDeleteWhen I found that Cactus before Christmas it had 3 plants shoved into one pot. Two of the plants had sort of peach-coloured blooms and the other was a regular pink. After they finished blooming I repotted them. I think they appreciated the new pots.
DeleteI once had an Easter Cactus that always bloomed in the fall. Who knows why?! Your's is beautiful, even if it is a bit confused. :-)
ReplyDeleteBlessings and hugs,
Betsy
Beautiful, a real delight to see.
ReplyDeleteI think the cactus is showing how much it is enjoying the love it receives, and is blooming again as a special thankyou :) xx
ReplyDeleteWe've a similar cactus -it is called 'A Crab Claw Cactus' and has red flowers. Have a great weekend there G.M.
Ger
Well after the way the world was turned upside down over a yr ago I am not surprised your catcus is blooming now..lol
ReplyDeleteThat cactus is so pretty. Such a pretty color. I don't know how you keep all your plants so neat and clean looking. Been missing you. I need to spend more time on the computer. :)
ReplyDeleteMy mom always put her Christmas cacti in the basement fir a big part of the year till it would not get light, thuscdeksying it blooming.
ReplyDeleteI have three varieties of the cactus that I've had for over 25 years -- they all bloom several times each year. I never put them into "hibernation" ... I keep them in the window all year round. I takes pieces from them throughout the year to makes new starts for friends and family. Besides my philodendron, the cacti are probably my fave houseplants. Yours are beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I never do anything special with my Cacti either to make them bloom.
DeleteWOW! That is so very pretty! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
