Thanksgiving Cactus

My Christmas Cactus is re-blooming!  From what I understand it is a Thanksgiving Cactus not a Christmas Cactus at all.  Apparently the same plant sold as a Thanksgiving one in the U.S. will be sold as a Christmas one here in Canada because we celebrate our Thanksgiving in early October and by the time our plant blooms it's late November and we're thinking Christmas.

All this still doesn't explain why it's blooming now. There is an Easter variety but its leaves are so different there's no confusing it with the Thanksgiving one.

Holiday Cacti originated in the rain forests of Brazil with warmth, humidity and indirect light so successfully growing them is quite different from ordinary Cacti. Those desert plants need far less water and more light (preferably sunlight).  So the East window where my Cacti grows ( next to a fern that gets spritzed often) is ideal.

  1. It certainly looks healthy!

Mine haven't bloomed yet - I have quite a few I propagated, in the greenhouse, and they maybe didn't get enough darkness last winter? I never know what to expect from them.

  2. This is a coincidence as I have only been reading about Christmas Cactus today as I have a little one given away by my local florist during this lockdown. I read apparently if they are very happy with were they are thay can bloom a few times a year. Looking at your lovely plant gives me a real incentive to care carefully for my little one.

  8. Oh what pretty colored flowers on your cactus. I don't think I've seen that color before. It almost looks apricot! How pretty. It's welcoming Spring and Easter!

    1. When I found that Cactus before Christmas it had 3 plants shoved into one pot. Two of the plants had sort of peach-coloured blooms and the other was a regular pink. After they finished blooming I repotted them. I think they appreciated the new pots.

    Ger

  17. I have three varieties of the cactus that I've had for over 25 years -- they all bloom several times each year. I never put them into "hibernation" ... I keep them in the window all year round. I takes pieces from them throughout the year to makes new starts for friends and family. Besides my philodendron, the cacti are probably my fave houseplants. Yours are beautiful!!
