Books and Flowers

I went to drop off my box of things at the thrift store and stayed to browse for a while mainly in the book section. I found several books for myself and 2 that my youngest son will want. Those are the Solzenitsyn books. I have trouble with his name let alone reading his books but son3 is a fan so I look for them for him.
I had made up my mind not to go anywhere near the toy area of the store lest I see any of the many Teddy bears I donated last week. What I hadn't figured on was that Teddy bears would be a feature of all the Valentine's displays in various areas of the store.  I didn't like to see them there. Crazy, isn't it?

One of my Amaryllis has buds just starting to open.. This is one of the bulbs I bought marked down after Christmas.  So far the stem seems strong enough to support the flowers but last year's plants needed help so they wouldn't fall over. I'll keep an eye on this one as more flowers open.

My Snowdrops are beginning to bloom. These are NOT  mine, just a pic off the internet. It's raining and I don't feel like going out to take a picture of mine.

I made a new square yesterday. Pineapple and Coconut. It turned out very well and it's a recipe I'll use again for sure.   I had every intention of posting the recipe but I can't find it in English.  The cooking show was in French as was, of course,  the recipe..  IF anyone really wants it I will do my best to translate and post it here. Basically it consists of a base that you prebake and a cooked topping of  crushed pineapple, lemon juice, sugar and cornstarch that you pour on the partially baked base and bake again.

Thanks for coming by; I hope you'll leave a comment so I know you were here.

  1. That was an interesting observation of your maybe wistful (?) feelings about seeing the teddy bears again. It is very human, I think. The dessert looks very good!

  2. Seeing those bears, did it feel like you were giving your friends away?
    Watching amaryllis bloom is exciting.

  3. The book section is always the first stop when I go to the thrift store, I usually get lucky.

  4. I love browsing thrift stores. I would have been very melancholy if I had seen my teddy bears on display. Sometimes we know it's time to let things go, but that doesn't mean we won't miss them.

  5. I am surprised at your flowers . . . how delightful to have some already blooming. That dessert goods amazing . . . I love my sweets:) If I lived closer, you might just see me pulling into your driveway asking for a taste :)

  6. You are always finding something in the thrift store! I would like to have a visit in one but am afraid to go anywhere that isn't necessary because of the flu that is going around. I am trying to get over a cold and cough so don't need the flu. You must have a green thumb with all your lovely flowers! Nancy

  7. It is always a bit strange to see our former possession's in thrift shops. That's been happening to me a lot lately as I am donating so many things, yet I still like to shop from time to time. I imagine the teddy bears would feel a bit more like "members of the family" than just "things".
The best things come from your kitchen. Your family must love it.
Your amaryllis looks so pretty. A definite mood lifter on those rainy days.

  8. I don't blame you for not wanting to linger outside to take a picture of your snowdrops! The pineapple square looks delicious :)

  9. I read The Gulag Archipelago as a teenager and new Christian. I found it very interesting. The C.S. Lewis book looks good. Is it a book of his letters? I love reading his letters and seeing into his heart through them. Your teddies will bless someone else a lot. I know it must be hard to give them away. :) Happy February!

    1. Yes, the C.S.L. book consists of selections from his letters. I hope my teddies find homes. Children these days ( doesn't that just sound exactly like a granny!!) don't much care for teddy bears ( or dolls) it seems.

  11. I don't have that particular C.S. Lewis book. I'm going to have to check Amazon and see if they have it. I understand completely how you feel about seeing your teddy bears out on display. It is one thing to donate things but quite another to see them actually out for sale. That Amaryllis is going to be gorgeous when all of those blooms open up! I didn't think to look after Christmas for one. You have the best ideas of how to bring spring into winter! That pineapple and coconut square looks and sounds delicious. So you speak French? IF you ever decide to translate the recipe I'd definitely be interested in giving it a try.

  14. Mmm, those coconut bars look delightful1 I planted snowdrops last year, and hope they bloom this year :) I'm looking forward to spring too. I always have to check out the book section too at the thrift store, and it is rather startling to donate something, and then see it on display, lol!

  15. Hi Granny Marigold
Your blog is lovely to read...and see...such beautiful flowers inside and out. We just got 10 cm of snow with more to come tomorrow so I am a bit envious of hearing about rain and seeing the picture outside in your yard it looks like spring! Your lemon squares look yummy and bravo to you for understanding it in french! Are there many people in your area who speak french? My Daughter took a 6 week French Program at UBC a few years ago and I was surprized they had a French Program there. I knew deep down that she really just wanted out of Ontario....lol...It is so interesting you mentioned "your" teddy bears were at the thrift shop. I have been going thru the same thing here. I have been helping my Mom downsize and we hired a company to sell some stuff for her. Turns out they lied to us and donated most of it claiming it was not worth anything. For the past few months it has been showing up at one local second hand store and it is really hard to see my moms "worthless" stuff being sold for so much! Hopefully this ends soon and when we donate next I will go to a far away store.
