Orchids

I have never tried growing an Orchid before but at the grocery store this morning there was a display of mini Orchids for less than ten dollars. I decided to try my hand and am hoping to keep them healthy and blooming. If anyone has advice I'd be grateful for any tips.  I have found conflicting tips on-line.  For instance some recommended giving the plant ice cubes in order to keep them watered but others said that was like frostbite to the poor plant.
The tag on these merely said Petite Orchid so I'm not sure if that's the name of this variety or if it's just confirming that it is a mini.  From pictures on-line I'd say these are mini Phalaenopsis.

Wish me luck growing these pretty little plants!!

  1. There is still some confusion about the two books I mentioned a few posts ago. When I said I had a difficult time believing anyone's life could be so full of awful happenings I was referring to the book Educated NOT to the one about Hannah Hauxwell. I enjoyed both reading about Hannah and also watching the videos. Sorry for not being more clear on this.

  2. I think orchids like a little mist now and then, rather than a lot of water.

  3. I got my first Orchid about 2 years ago and it is still alive - I now have 6 from Mini to very large. I have learned alot about them from UTUBE - MissOrchidGirl videos.

I never water with ice cubes - I use room temperature water and place the pot in a bowl so that the water soaks in from the bottom. The large plants I leave in about 20 - 30 minutes once a week and the mini's get about 10 minutes once a week.

Look at the pot the plant is potted in (not the decorative one) and if the potting mixture is moist the plant doesn't need any water. Never water from the top and let water sit in the leaves, this causes rotting.

Try out the video's they have a ton of information for beginners and have taught me how not to kill mine anyway - and I have had 1 rebloom hoping for a second to rebloom shortly.

    1. Thanks for the tips. I've begun to watch the Orchid Girl's videos and she has a lot of good points.

  4. I don't know much about orchids either, but I think those are the wrong kinds of pots. They look like Styrofoam cups, but I am guessing they are not.Anyway they should probably be in specific orchid pots with the correct kind od planting medium. They sure are pretty. Good luck with them.

    1. They are in clear plastic pots which are in those ceramic ones.

  7. those are so pretty! we water ours (that should read my Husband waters... :) ) about once a week, soaked in a bowl. But we are not that great with them; we had one that did bloom for a few years and then well, did not and we gave it away I think... we get a lot of them from my husband's work (they do a different flower arrangement every week and get rid of the ones of the last week so they are up for grabs). I hope these go well for you and just enjoy them, they are so beautiful!

  8. I have not ever had any orchids myself. They are so pretty. I don't think I have enough bright light and the air by our windows can be so cold in the winter time; not sure they would survive. Wish you the best that your flowers continue to bloom. Love your African Violets too.

  9. My daughter loves orchids, but she finds them difficult to keep alive. I have never been interested in growing them... mostly because my plants are more neglected than fussed over!

  10. I recently purchased my first orchid. I keep hearing that they're not as hard to grow as one might think. The original blooms have faded and it is looking a bit sad. The directions advise giving it 3 ice cubes per week and a bright light. Not direct sunlight. I did buy some fertilizer but haven't fed it yet. I think I will visit Miss Orchid Girl. I did watch a video on growing them on P Allen Smith's YouTube channel. Hope you have good luck with yours. You seem to have a green thumb.

  12. I love orchids, but I have never had one. I have a feeling that you will do well with your new little plant. I finally got around to watching YouTube videos of Hannah Hauxwell, and wow, did I ever love her. Now, I just must find the book. I think there may be more than one book about her. She reminded me a great deal of my grandmother, so I choked back a few tears now and then. Thank you for sharing the information about her.

  14. They're gorgeous. I have never had one and don't have a clue how to keep them alive. I heard of the ice cube trick. My daughter used it on a couple of orchids she inherited from her mother-in-law, but ... she killed them. So maybe not the ice cube method.
