This and That

My stove is fixed. Middle son got the proper element and installed it with no problem.

I'm doing the usual Monday laundry and also defrosting our extra fridge. It's very old and has to be manually defrosted which can be a bit messy but worth it. I don't understand exactly why it is that we need 2 fridges but apparently we do. I think the old fridges ( in fact the old appliances in general) were much less apt to give problems. Now we're told that one can expect a new stove, fridge or whatever to last 7 years. If you're lucky.

Lots of ducks on the lake. Amid all the Mallards there's one Wood Duck. He's hard to spot. Let me know if you can find him.

I hope you're week is off to a great start.

Thanks for visiting,  GM

  1. Actually it's a nearby creek with the unattractive name of Fishtrap Creek.

  2. I didn't find the wood duck. One year, while my husband did his master's degree, we lived behind Fishtrap Creek. I loved walking the pathway there. I don't know why appliances don't last as long as they used to. 7-10 years seems very short compared to earlier versions. That said, our fridge and stove are nearly 19 years old now and still working just fine.

  3. I did spot the Wood Duck...aren't they handsome. When we were first married, we were given an old electric stove that was 4o inches wide, but still only had 4 burners. We did have replace an element in the oven on it...it did not act anything at all like the one I told you about in the previous post. I loved that stove! It had the oven on one half, so was sort of small...and the other side had two drawers. It baked perfectly.

We were told the same thing about new appliances only lasting 6 or 7 years when we got our washer a year or so ago.

And another blogger said they were told that about the Central Air units...

Hope you have a great week ahead.

  4. I think I see the wood duck in the top picture. His head is shaped differently, guess it is truly a "ducktail" style of feathers. My nephew has a little pink fridge that is from the 1950s, that was our "extra" fridge kept in the garage for many years. It has a pull-handle and a tiny freezer by today's standards, yet was adequate for a family of 11+ for years before it became the "cold drink" fridge!

  5. I didn't find the wood duck. I'm glad you got your stove fixed. It's nice to have handy guys around isn't it? We had an expensive refrigerator at our house that only lasted 6 years. We were told the same thing you were. You're lucky to get 6-7 years with a new appliance. Meanwhile our good friends still have and are using the refrigerator they bought when they got married 55 years ago. Not a bit of trouble with it!
    Blessings,

  6. Congratulations for good service for the oven from your son! You are so blessed!

For me also Monday is "cleaning-day". So the coming week has some space for other things - -

I also say, that the old machines are better than the new. Really!

The ducks are my favourites! I could not see the difference, so I say big respect to your seeing!

  7. You sure have a lot of Mallards there - beautiful. Six days of Summer left here - then into Autumn. Has been very cold to-day- I'm dressed as if it were Winter. Best Wishes. KEV.

  8. I am doing some spring cleaning when my back allows me! I stop to rest in between. Probably lean the window snow.
    I can’t see the duck?

  9. Our 1974 caravan still has it's original gas stove and it is wonderful. I wish I could bring it home and use it instead of our modern one, I much prefer it. Hope you have a good week too. x

  11. Hi GM! Yes, that's so true about appliances. They don't make them like they used to. My new stove is no frills which is fine but it doesn't seem accurate temperature wise and thus timing is tricky. Oh well.

  12. I enlarged the photo, but don't think I can spot the wood duck.
Glad your stove is back in working order again.

  13. How nice to look out at ducks swimming alone so peacefully on the lake.
We have a frig out in Steve's shop that is at least 70 years old . . . works perfectly. They talk about the problem of landfills and yet they build things that need replacing . . . if they could build them to last in the 40's and 50's they certainly should be able to now.
