African Violets and Cookies

I have often lamented that I have no luck with African Violets.  I buy them in bloom and when the blooms fade I can't get the plants to rebloom. Some time ago I had 4 sad looking violets which I was about to throw out. I changed my mind and kept 2 of them putting them in a north window and giving them a severe talking to. Lo and behold after many months of ignoring them I saw buds forming so I watered them.

Now they look like this!!

While they were being ignored I found this beauty and couldn't resist taking it home. African violets don't like the awful heat we've had ( no one does) so I put it in the bedroom where there is A/C. The blind is down to keep it cool so in order for my violet to get any light I put it on the bed right under the skylight.

Truly a pampered plant but it is forming new buds even while it has the blooms it came with.

It was cooler today and the cookie tin was empty so I baked a batch of Almond cookies. They're quite a plain cookie but lovely straight out of the freezer and with a cup of tea (or coffee).

The week is almost done. I hope yours was a good one.

  1. Wish I was nearby to try one of your cookies...they do look delicious! And your African Violets are so lovely. I haven't had a lot of luck growing them but my mother used to have beautiful blooming violets all over her house! Looks like your green thumb is working on your violets now too! Have a good weekend! Stay cool!

  6. Your violets are lovely! Mine seem to thrive more on neglect than by anything I know to do right by them. I was given two plants five years ago, and I divided them into five plants two years ago, and gave away a couple of them. Since then I think they have suffered from occasionally getting too much water, and I don't know if two of them will ever recover from the resulting curling leaves. I might just give up, count it a lesson learned, and buy a new plant!

  10. When I was a girl, it seemed every home had African Violets. It was almost as though the ladies we knew competed with one another for the most beautiful African Violets. My mother had some success for she tended to neglect them because of all the work she had to do raising a large family. GM your violets are beautiful. I think you have this thing figured out. I agree with Anni. I love violets and anything almond!

  11. I laughed out loud to see your African Violet treated so royally! Well, it is the royal purple hue, so surely the pampering is deserved. Your violets are looking BETTER than they do coming right from the growers, what an impressive feat! I think that north window (at least in summer) is the perfect perch for the violets. They are just gorgeous.

  13. African Violets are also one of my personal favorites. They do,for a time rest after producing all of those lovely flowers. I keep mine on the dryer side, and always water from the bottom. They do just fine. Yours are lovely, and will continue to bloom after they've rested a bit.

  14. How very pretty! I have never tried growing African Violets but they bring back so many memories of mom's wooden "plant tree" where she had all of her many African Violets. I do believe they were one of her favorite plants and she had a knack for getting them to bloom! It also brings to mind Mom propagating them by leaf cuttings! Your post has brought back alot of memories!
