Left-Handed People Day and Pickled Beans

Today is apparently National Left Handers Day.  It is celebrated on August 13 every year. I thought maybe they had it today being that it is Friday the 13th.  This day "recognizes all those individuals who have mastered using their left hand in a right-handed world."

In our family my DH is a leftie as well as eldest son and eldest granddaughter. Both DH and our son are missing part of a finger and I have no doubt it has something to do with the tools they used (both are/were in construction). Tools that are made for right handers.

We're still having very hot weather and the smoke that hangs in the air makes breathing hard. Also today the smoke has a particularly bad smell.

First thing this morning we went to do our usual Friday grocery shopping. Came home and sat down for a second cup of coffee before starting on the beans which were picked yesterday. Do you make pickled beans?  They're quite easy to make and most of our family likes them.
We had gusty winds yesterday and one of the bean poles was knocked over. I'm quite tired of beans by now anyway.

Thanks for visiting,  GM

  1. Those beans look delicious! I love pickles of any kind so would like beans pickled too. I picked another big dish paan full of green beans this HOT morning and like you; about tired of green beans. Don't know if my beans are nice enough to pickle but I'm going to check and look on line for a recipe. Thank you Granny Marigold.

  3. I love beans...any kind. I guess the closest I've had if "pickled beans" is bean salad.

We have no lefties in our family.

  4. Your pickled bean look delicious. I didn't know it was a national left-handed day. I started out left handed in the first grade, but my teacher made me change hands. If she had allowed me to continue, I would be left-handed today. Have a great day and hope the weather gets cooler.

  5. My husband is left handed.
We have just enough beans to eat fresh. While I like dill pickles and pickled beets, I am not a fan of most pickled stuff.

  6. I'll have to tell my left handed husband that it is a special day for him. We who are right handed probably don't realize how challenging some everyday object can be for the lefties.
I have never made or tasted pickled green beans before. They look tempting though.

  7. Didn't know left handers had a day. Ken is left handed. I'm right handed but use my left hand for the mouse on my computer.

  9. My husband is a left hander, too. He had to learn to rite with his right hand, when he was a child. Today they let left-hander-children more freedom. Im sorry, that your DH and son had problems with tools, wich are made for right handers. I never considered that ..

O you still have smoke in the air because of the fires in the heat! I'm so sorry. I am very sad for the forest. In Europe we have fires in the forests in Greece and Italy and more. O Blue Planet Earth!!

Your beans look really delicous! A lot of work!

  10. Hello GM! I have heard your air quality is bad because of the smoke. Stay inside. Don't breathe it! Interesting about left-handed day! I hope you are well. Yay for pickled beans!

  12. WE have two lefties in the family also. I always try to sit them on the ends so they don't have to bump elbows with the righties eating dinner:)

  13. Dennis and Alex are both left-handers too. I'm sorry about all of the smoke. I do know how hard it is to breathe with it in the air. I love green beans. I would like to plant some next year but I know the deer would just eat them all.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  14. Three of my seven grandchildren are left handed, but none of my children are. My husband writes with his left hand but does everything else with his right. I have a sister who is left handed and my husband had a brother who was left handed. I am putting up a lot of beans too... we pick a bowlful every day! I've been freezing mine. I hope the smoke drifts away soon. Have a great weekend!

  15. As a classroom teacher for all those years, I found that most left-handers were very artistic. And, most had a beautiful handwriting. Because of a broken right wrist earlier this year, I had my own experiences of being left-handed. We seem to like almost everything pickled. You will be happy for your pickled beans next winter.

  18. We don’t eat much pickles here except tiny sort of cucumber.
It must be difficult to breathe with all that smoke!
I hope it will stop someday.
Nothing is really done here for left handed people
At school they used to obliged them to use their right hand ( nowadays they don’t do it anymore)

  19. Those canned beans look so pretty! My family is so large that I cook for that I am afraid I would use lots of jars! LOL! Well sir, I did not know there was a day designed for lefties! I would have celebrated too! My mom is a leftie and my only brother is too. I could never teach my children to tie their shoes because I was a leftie. But...they learned! LOL! Happy Week GM. Hugs and blessings, Cindy
