What I'm reading: The Melissa Harrison book was so well written and interesting until about two thirds or more through the book when suddenly it became depressing and had a fairly unsatisfactory ending. Not one of the three main characters had their hopes/dreams fulfilled. I felt depressed when I was done reading.
Miss Read, on the other hand, never disappoints me.
Does anyone remember the Ideals magazines? I used to have a big stack of them which I donated. This week I bought these 2 "for old times sake". For all I know they might be some of the ones I donated years ago. I enjoyed paging through them reading the poems and looking at the pictures. Next time I go to the thrift store I'll take them back and some one else can enjoy them.
I bought a bag of Daffodil bulbs and put some in pots and the rest in the ground. I hope they'll all grow and bloom next Spring.
My Thanksgiving/Christmas Cactus have lots of buds. I bought a potted plant with two different coloured blooms last year. After it finished blooming I divided it into 3 pots but I don't know what colour I'll end up with. These look quite pale so maybe white?
Years ago I had a Chinese Lantern plant and I'm not too sure exactly why I don't still have it. They tend to be very hardy and even invasive so I don't think it died. I think I'll look for another one. At this time of the year their papery pods look wonderful. I got this picture off the internet in case you are not familiar with this plant. Isn't it pretty?
Teacup # 24
Thanks for coming by, GM
No, can't say I remember the ideals magazine.
ReplyDeleteI like Miss Read too and reading the Thrush Green series.
Another pretty tea cup.
Chinese Lanterns are lovely. I think, they are somehow sensitive. I also don't have them in my garden. My neighbour only had some weak results of these fineorange decorations this year.
ReplyDeleteOH so many buds on your Thanksgiving/Christmas Cactus! It will be a surprize, when hey open their mystery :)
The orange colour of the Daffodil bulbs is wonderful!
I wish you a lot of joy by reading and looking pictures.
I am not familiar with Ideal Magazine. Several of my Halloween/Thanksgiving/Christmas cacti are blooming.
ReplyDeleteI remember those Ideals magazines very well. Always such beautiful photography. Yes I really like those chinese lanterns....so pretty. and your cactus is going to give you many beautiful flowers. Lucky you!
ReplyDeleteI ADORE Paper Lantern plants! Love love love them. The Golden Rain or Chain tree has similar lanterns but nowhere near as pretty and fall-like. Your mums look great. I remember Ideals magazine very well! How could I have forgotten? I have to be very careful with the novels I read. If they are sad or upsetting, I am too sensitive and become overwhelmed. I know, it's odd. You certainly have a green thumb, GM. The cacti are loaded with blooms.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of the Ideals magazine but it does look like it would be one I would like to see. I haven't hear of Miss Read either. Where in the world is my education? :-)
ReplyDeleteAnother pretty teacup. I'm enjoying seeing each and every one of them.
Blessings,
Betsy
You are right that Miss Read never disappoints. I read a Melissa Harrison novel with an ambiguous ending, as well. Very unsatisfying. Have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteThat tea set looks antique!! Pretty! Is it purchased new or from thrifting? Maybe there is a history behind it... royalty?!
ReplyDeleteThose daffodils are a favorite of mine!! And your Christmas cactus will truly brighten the room!!
yes, I remember those magazines!
Very few of my teacups were bought new. I get them mostly from thrift stores.
DeletePerhaps English royal hands drank from this very cup!!
DeleteHope your Daffodils do well next Spring G.M.- Best Wishes. KEV.
ReplyDeleteI do remember the Ideals magazine...funny thing it crossed my mind the other day.
ReplyDeleteLove that teavup.
Isn't it nice to see the Cactus coming with new buds? Here we call it November/Christmas Cactus. I just got one from my friends in the women's missiongroup when I kept the last meeting here in our old home before we will move in December. We have our meetings in each others homes. I got it with a wish that it would follow me on our moving and blooming again for many years.
ReplyDeleteMiss Read is good for the tired mind. I recently reread several of the Fairacre books as I prefer those over Thrush Green. As for Ideals, I have about 200 of them. Also good for the tired mind.
ReplyDeleteI also prefer the Fairacre books to the Thrush Green but I'll read any of Miss Read's books ( and buy them IF I find any which is difficult). You have more Ideal magazines than anyone I've ever talked to about them!!
DeleteLove the vase of chrysanthemums, their colour is so indicative of the glory of autumn. Books that let you down at the end are as bad as movies that leave you to decide the ending for yourself!
ReplyDeleteTake care, Mxx
My Christmeas cactus, now 3 years old, isnt as far on as your, but I can see the beginning of buds. Your looks as though it might be pink?
ReplyDeleteI also don't like books with depressing endings, no we need optimism, right now in this world. We are living better than ever before in history and yet there is far too much that needs to be improved on our planet ... so there is optimism for all of us and momentum for good work and action.
ReplyDeleteYour plants are super beautiful, I'm curious about the color of the flowers ... and yes, how right you are ... the tulips have to be in the ground and I also put daffodils. Have a good sunday.
Many greetings from me.
I remember Mom had quite a pile of the Ideals publications, alot of which were gifts from us kids. Your mention of them brings back alot of memories. About the Chinese Lanterns - they were terribly invasive here and it took years to get rid of them, lots of digging out roots and spraying with Roundup as they spread everywhere and started coming up in the lawn. Quite the job eradicating them though the papery husks are so beautiful! This current teacup is beautiful!

Looks like you might have blooms soon on that Cactus1 My Mother's pink one is blooming now. Yes those Ideal magazines were fun to look through! Such a pretty pumpkin farm!
ReplyDeleteI do remember those Ideals magazines. They were beautifully illustrated and fun to read. the photos seemed to be the ideal of a lovely home.
ReplyDeleteYes, I remember the Ideals magazine. Always loved the beautiful pictures...poetry came in second back then. I don't know how i would be now that I am older.
