Are you familiar with Halvah? For us it's part of the special foods we have only at this time of the year. The internet explains that Halvah is a confectionery originating from Persia and is made with sesame paste and sugar. I chose one that had layers of dark chocolate while DH prefers his plain. Either way it is delicious.
This week just flew by. We celebrated my DH's 80th birthday. That's a big milestone!! Otherwise it was all the usual things we had to do. I hope your week went well.
Thanks for taking time from your busy lives to visit, Granny M.
Is it like ice cream?
ReplyDeleteIt's sort of firm. It can be sliced easily.
DeleteNo, I am not familiar with halvah, but it looks scrumptious.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your DH on his milestone year.

Halvah looks good! Happy birthday and congrats to your hubby! :)
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of halvah! It looks good though! Wishing your hubby a very Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteI adore halvah, having learned to enjoy it in Turkey as an exchange student. On a subsequent visit I ate way too much. When I went to college halvah was in the natural food stores and ever since then, in California it is ubiquitous. You can buy it in small, candy-bar like form, or in larger blocks of random sizes.
ReplyDeleteIn Turkey a tahini (sesame butter) seller would go up and down the streets leading a donkey, on whose back was a big barrel of tahini. He would call out, "Tahin!" -- it sounded like "Tah-heeen!" -- and the housewives would take a container out and have him ladle in whatever amount they wanted to buy. Then, they would mix sugar and lemon with the tahini and dip bread in it. I mention that because it was another form of the sweet, with almost the same flavor.
But I've never heard of serving it alone as a sort of birthday cake. I might take up that tradition for my own birthday, because I like halvah more than cake. :-) Happy birthday to your husband!

Congratulations to your husband on his 80 years!
ReplyDeleteI do know halvah - it was a Christmas tradition in my grandparents' and parents' homes when I was growing up. I buy it sometimes now. I heard that the Mennonites came to appreciate it when many of them immigrated from Ukraine and passed through Persia (Iran) and on to Canada.
We have Persian friends who are surprised that we would know about halvah. I've not seen the one with chocolate - that would be very good!
Happy birthday to your hubby. Eighty years is well worth celebrating!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried halvah but it sounds rather yummy.
I like the advice the Snowman is giving out :)
Never heard of it, but it looks mighty tasty. Is the light layer vanilla or maple maybe?
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday (belated) to your hubby
It isn't maple but I'm not sure exactly what it is. Probably vanilla.
DeleteHappy Birthday to DH...80? I never would have guessed- Congratulations.
ReplyDeleteI just recently came across Halvah in or watching something. Otherwise I know nothing about it.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated Birthday to your husband.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of that cake before.
