Do you have fond memories of the annual Sear's Christmas catalog, otherwise known as the Wish Book? In the days before Shopping Malls and department stores children, especially rural ones, made their Christmas lists by seeing what was available and affordable.
Sears first published this catalog in 1933. The last one came out in 2011. If you've hung on to any of them there is apparently a demand for the old copies.
After doing a bit of research ( google) I found out that Poinsettias do not come in blue. (See last post). Any that exist have been spray painted. How disappointing.
Rose wondered what I put into my Green Bean soup. Besides the obvious beans I added onion & carrots as well as a liter of beef broth and Summer Savory. It's not really a recipe as such but like almost any soup it can take any vegetables added. My Mom would have added potatoes and sometimes I do but this time I didn't.
Not much else to write today. Thank you for coming by
I could not wait for the catalog to come in the mail as a child!
ReplyDeleteI think it is sad that they spray flowers they do it a lot.

The wish book used to be my favorite. I would go over and over the pages. A great memory.
ReplyDeleteYour soup sounds good!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you put a post on your blog about the Sears & Roebuck Wish Book. I was just thinking about the Wish Book today. We looked forward to getting it as kids and loved to wish for presents. That was the good old days. Wish they still published it. Wishing you a Merry Christmas.
ReplyDeleteOh, how I well remember the Sears Wishbook. Every year we would look forward to our copy arriving and we would sit and pour through the pages. The toys were always in the back, if I remember right. We would circle the items we wanted and turn the page corner down just a tiny bit so Mom could find it. Then for good measure, we would make a list with said items name, page number and price. The adults were just as smitten with it. :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you for your sweet comment on my blog about my sisters wedding. It was very, very simple and very, very lovely.
Blessings and hugs,
Betsy
Oh yes, I sure do remember the Sears wish book!!.
ReplyDeleteI don't remember the Wish Book.....
ReplyDeleteI love soups and have a potato soup cooking on the stove right now. I never make it the same way twice but it's always good!
Okay, they are not really in blue color. Sorry, but I would not buy them now...
ReplyDeleteI certainly do remember the Sears catalog, the Wish Book. We rural kids spent hours looking through the pages.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about the wish books earlier today, kids are really missing out!
ReplyDeleteIt is disappointing a bit about the poinsettias...would be especially so if you bought one expecting it to be blue the next year.
ReplyDeleteThanks for answering about your green bean soup. I might add some carrots if I have them on hand next time. I make green beans, ham, potatoes and onions...so was wondering if ours were similar. My sister used to make it but used smoked sausage instead of ham.
I did not had Christmas catalog in fact I did not have to choose. My poinsettia is white like my amaryllis
ReplyDeleteI loved the old Christmas catalogs....wish books. I remember them so well when we were kids. I have always thought that some people probably saved them. I was sad when they quit putting them out. Yes, I knew a florist years ago that was spraying their poinsettias blue and other colors too. People bought all the colors!
ReplyDeleteGoing to the nursery with Mom & my sis was so much fun! The blue pointsettias were actually quite tasteful, lightly colored with a wee dusting of festive glitter.
ReplyDeleteI was tempted but I don't decorate for the holls - I go to my folks' or my daughter's to enjoy their beautifully decorated homes!

Oh yes! How I drooled over that book!
