African Violet and Cheesecake

In spite of my many failed efforts to grow African Violets I gave in and bought this pretty one yesterday. Actually I can grow them fine but after the blooms they came with are done I can't get them to rebloom. I've followed the hints on various sites but they result in a few pathetic flowers.
Oh well, it will bring me cheer as long as it lasts anyway.

This morning I had decided to bake a cheesecake. Unfortunately I forgot that the last time I used my springform pan it broke. What to do. Since it's 'just for family' it doesn't really matter if it's not round. I used an 8X8 cake pan. I'm looking forward to tasting it.  There's an ongoing debate around here concerning cheesecake. Which is better...baked or unbaked. Next time it will be the unbaked which is actually much less work.

I've been trying to do a post every second day but sometimes I find it hard to think of something to write about.   Thanks for coming by to see what I'm up to.

  1. African Violets are one of my favorites. Mine will rebloom many times, I keep them on the dry side, don't know if that will help. Yours are lovely, and I'll be over for the test taste of baked vs unbaked. Cheesecake is absolutely wonderful no matter how they are done.

  2. Hope you have much joy with your African Violet. Anyhow this nice plant will have a good place in your home!

My family also loves Cheesecake. My sons sometimes bake it: MMmmmmmm!!! We don't know the unbaked style.

The word "springform" is the same as in Germany: "Springform".

    1. Dori, the first cheesecake I ever ate was made by a lovely German lady who did not use cream cheese. She used cottage cheese which she put through a sieve. It was delicious.

    2. This is really nice, that she was from my country and that you made good experiences with her cake!

  3. Such pretty flowers. We love cheesecake here at my house. I bake one for Ken for his birthday every year. Mine is high and I need a spring form pan or a angel food cake pan. I'm sure yours came out great. I'd sure love a piece.

  4. Since I'm not eating dairy, I can't have cheesecake, but I do love it! Yours looks REALLY good!

    1. My DIL avoids dairy also but has a recipe for a substitute cheesecake, I'll ask her about it.

  6. I don't have good luck with African Violets either. I always blame it on not having an east facing window. I love cheesecake, baked or unbaked! Have a great weekend!

  7. My MIL used to grow African violets under lights and had a huge collection. My husband also liked them, he had one plant that he used to talk to every day and it used to flower and flower. Obviously I was no substitute as the plant stopped flowering after he was gone, and it has now died.
In the cheesecake debate, I much prefer the uncooked version :)
I always enjoy reading your blog :) xx

    1. I must try talking to this latest African Violet and see whether it responds by reblooming!

  8. Your cheesecake looks great and so does your violet! I have tried various violets too, and I know what you mean about getting them to rebloom. My mother was a whiz at it....maybe they were in the right window or something! She had a black wrought-iron round plant holder and she had every color of violet on it and they were always blooming! Maybe you'll have better luck with your violet this time!

  9. I like baked cheese cake. Yum.
I can't grow African violets either. Either they like your house or they don't, I guess.

  10. I bought my Mom an African Violet for Mother's day one year. She had it for 15 years before she died and it bloomed and bloomed. I kept it alive for another 20 years but it rarely bloomed. Then it died virtually overnight. I haven't been able to keep one alive since then. I would love to try again someday when I have a house again. I gave all of my houseplants away last week since I have no room in the trailer.
We actually prefer the Jello no-bake cheesecake at our house. Dennis and Mandy have always asked for them for their birthdays. No baked ones at all.
I always find your posts interesting. It's nice to hear what other people are doing in their everyday lives.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  11. I meant to say that my mom would switch her African violets to different windows when she wanted them to bloom, but for the life of me I cannot remember which room they preferred to bloom in.

  14. You never know w African violets-I have one that used to bloom. At one time it had 120 little flowers(I did count them best as I could) There were so many and it was gorgeous! After that I split it into 3 plants, giving two of my daughter's each one and one for me. She keeps growing but no blooms at all now-

  15. I love African Violets but I can't get them to grow either. My mother could and she gave me so many tips but they didn't work for me. Your table looks so pretty with them sitting there in their pretty vase, something pretty to look at while you enjoy a piece of that wonderful cheesecake!!

  16. This African Violet may be just the one that decides to bloom for you. You do have a green thumb you know! I like both kinds of cheesecakes.

  17. Interesting about your African Violets. I am terrible with houseplants, really bad. But, I have two African Violets that belonged to my mum. They have been here 4.5 years now. They have bloomed quite a few times. They get nothing but the occasional water added to the bottom of the pot every once in a while. Often they are quite dry for a length of time, because watering house plants is something I just can't remember to do. They are in an east facing window, so do actually get some sun on them the first part of the morning. I think if I can get them to flower, anyone should be able to! Maybe neglect is the key, lol!
