This and That

Good Tuesday Morning!!  It's going to be another scorcher so I was outside doing a little walk-about
seeing what needed deadheading and what absolutely needed to be watered.  I'm trying to use as little water as possible now that our numerous rain water barrels are empty.

I noticed how similar the sunflowers are to Rudbeckias. Of course the sunflower heads are much bigger but the resemblance is there.

Youngest son picked yet more Oregon grapes and brought his fruit, sugar and jars here to make more jam.  It looks like stirring jam is very meditative.

Today would have been Beatrix Potter's 154th birthday. Don't we all love both her story and her stories?  I've watched the movie of her life a number of times and find something to enjoy about it every time.  She died at the age of 77 of pneumonia and heart problems.  She left over 4000 acres to the National Trust ( this included 14 or 15 farms).

That's about all I have to say today.  I hope you're having a lovely day.

  1. I've always thought cooking was a bit therapeutic, but gardening even more so for me! Your sunflowers and rudbeckia do look so much alike. We didn't get any sunflowers to grow this year (I blame the bunnies and birds for eating the seeds), but the black-eyed susan sure did well! The tag on it said black-eyed, but it turned out to be the brown-eyed, which just fine anyway. Blessings to you GM!

  2. Beautiful flowers!

Youngest son...they grow up, don't they? Mine are teens now. Looking at your photo reminds me one day they will be tall men...

  5. It is so, so sweet that your grown son comes over to make jam on your stove. I just think that's wonderful, and says a lot about your relationship with him :)
I love the movie of B. Potter. Have you ever seen the lovely little "World of Beatrix Potter" animated videos, of her stories? They are on youtube. I LOVE the music and the introduction with the lady who plays BP and is writing the little letters by the fire on a rainy day.

  6. Just yesterday I re-watched Miss Potter again. How timely, considering I didn't know it was her birthday today. She left behind a wonderful legacy for children and adults alike.
I hope you're staying cool in this heat.

An amazing woman. She made marvellous drawings and did a lot for the nature.

Your son is very nice to come and cook jam! I see you have beautiful sunflowers. The small ones we call sun-hat in Germany.

Hope you will have enough water for all your plants. I think they are your children, too!

  9. I have canned an frozen food, but I have never made jam or jelly. I do not know why.

Your stove looks like mine...the oven takes forever to heat up.

  10. I have the movie about Beatrix Potter's life and have also watched it several times. She was a fascinating woman. I grew up with her stories but don't seem to own any of them anymore, I think I must have given them away to various children over the years.

  11. It's great that others in the family feel free to use your kitchen and that you give them leave to cook up yummy things. Do they also clean up after themselves? I don't say that to be critical; actually nothing makes me happier than to absolve myself of responsibility for cooking, and to just be the scullery maid. Less pressure! My family are learning that when they come, I want them to cook, too :-)

  12. Good that your Son visits for a spot of cooking up Jams. I made some Tomato Relish years ago - though now would be a good time to make Jams for Winter. Nice to talk with you Granny Marigold. Regards. KEV. (Sydney- Australia).
