Beans, Basil, and Jam Jars
Bush beans were ready for a first picking. We love green bean soup ( which absolutely needs Summer Savory to taste right). So that was our supper last night. Soup and fresh bread is my idea of a perfect supper.
I grew a good crop of Basil on the sunroom windowsill. I pick off leaves for my salads or on sliced tomatoes but there's no way I can keep up with the production. My son came up with his colander to trim my plants and make pesto ( which, surprisingly, I don't care for).
The pole beans are finally growing well after a slow start. These Scarlet runners are a big attraction for the Hummingbirds.
Ellabie commented on my jam jars which are empty Bonne Maman jars which I've picked up at the thrift store. The red-checkered lids are so attractive. I was in the Dollar store yesterday and saw these smaller ( 200ml) jars. Don't you just love Dollar stores?
I noticed that Jeri Landers at Hopalong Hollow has a fairly recent video that I had missed. She featured Tasha Tudor, in case you're interested.

Green bean soup is a new concept for me. How do you make it?
ReplyDeleteWe raise basil in the garden and make and freeze pesto, but I make it without garlic, as we are a garlic avoiding household.
Oh I love those darling little jars! So, so cute! I have a ton of oregano this year and need to harvest it. Just have not gotten around to it. Maybe I will do that about this weekend. I had the last of my beautiful tomatoes when we returned from the beach. I will miss them so much. Hugs and blessings, Cindy

ReplyDeleteI always save my Bonne Maman jars when I buy their jam. I love their lids.
Soup and good bread always make a fine supper. Green beans are a favorite as my parents always grew them in their garden, but I'm not familiar with green bean soup.

The Dollar Store has those jars?!?! I have got to check and see if ours do! I've never had green bean soup, just the usual butter beans back when we still did ham and beans. I'm growing a TON of basil over at the kids' garden. The regular sweet basil and the boxwood basil, love them both. I use basil in so much of my cooking... sure glad Jerry likes it or I'd be in a fix huh lol. Elissa and I planted pole beans and peas, but doggone if they just refused to do anything but spit out tiny 2 inch plants. We'd been so hopeful. Ah well. Have a great day, GM!
ReplyDeleteI do love the dollar store. It amazes me what you can get for $1. Of course there is really cheap stuff too, but I like a surprising amount of their product. Those green beans looks scrumptious. That's the one thing I miss growing.

I should clarify that out here at least, many Dollar Stores carry items of 2, 3, or even 4 dollars. They still call themselves Dollar Stores though.

I love seeing your beans. I don't grow them as my country neighbor always offers their "leftovers" which is way more than I could ever pick!

ReplyDeleteNo, they don't but I don't mind because I use them for jam which I make as we need it then keep those in the fridge.
DeleteOh, I do so love the pics...we raised cornfield beans which are similar to pole beans. We planted them in Hickory Cane Corn which grows real tall. The beans were so fun to pic...just pure joy. Not to mention to eat.
ReplyDeleteWe are harvesting green beans right now. I love potato soup with fresh green beans in it but it's too hot here to be eating soup so I'm freezing some beans for when cooler weather prevails!
ReplyDeleteI am making a note to plant Scarlet runners next year. You are eating so healthy thanks to your green thumb! We love roasted green beans, but we've never had green bean soup. I kind of have a thing about pretty little jam jars too!

My Mum was very good at Preserves - of the Jams - there was 'Mulberry', 'Marmelade', 'Tomato' and 'Plumb'...also, 'Pickles','Chutney' and 'Tomato Relish'. All the Preserves were made from our Backyard Vegetable Patch. Mum has been gone 40 Years- passing away in April 1980 aged 64 from Heart Failure. Recently in April just before my 64th Birthday of this year (2020) I have had Quadrupple Bypass Heart Surgery at Liverpool Cardiac Hospital- and am very fortunate that the Paramedics (Emily & David)- without their response I wouldn't be here at all -they saved my life.
