Day Lilies
I have many Day Lilies blooming right now. I went around and took some pictures.
Do you have a favourite?
Unfortunately three or four plants were totally infested with the Day Lily Gall Midge. This awful insect lays its eggs on the buds and instead of developing normally the buds are distorted and unable to open properly. Each affected bud is full of maggots. What I have to do is cut all affected buds, seal them in a ziplock baggie and dispose of them in the garbage NOT the compost. I suppose this is because the maggots continue to grow?
Below is a picture I took of some buds before I threw them away. The one on the left is the most affected one but they all would end up the same way.
On a much lighter note ( now that I've spoiled your appetite with images of maggots), I was watching a You Tube video on gardens and like usual I had the close captions on ( I'm losing my hearing). The speaker was mentioning the beautiful Rose Rambling Rector which the cc interpreted as Rambling Rectal. That made me laugh out loud.
I hope you're having a good day. G.M.

I have the orange lilies planted all around our fence but I do love the yellow ones. Yours are all beautiful. I've never heard of that midge you mentioned I hope it never comes here! Yuck!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of those bugs before. You learn something new every day! Dennis's sister was married to a deaf man so we always had closed captioning on for him. I laughed more than once at the interpretations.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Betsy
Your lilies are very lovely. How nasty to find such a beastly bug.
ReplyDeleteThis is Visits With Mary and I've been trying to visit your blog for a while now. For a reason I don't understand Webroot keeps blocking you. I'm so sorry this is happening because I enjoyed your blog. Just wanted you to know.
DeleteClosed captioning can be hilarious!! LOL! // My mama planted "Autumn Red" daylilies (1941 reg/intro) when we moved into the house they bought in 1964 (I was 4/5 years old)...my oldest son/daughter-in-law inherited that house from my dad (because I didn't want it) and those daylilies are still going strong. Nearly every place that we have lived in Kansas over the years has some of those growing because I always took transplants with me. // Your daylilies are gorgeous!! The maggots, not so much lol. // Blessings to you!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen this on my day lilies; my greatest threat is deer, munching on the leaves and buds. It's difficult to pick a favorite, but I really like the purple d'oro.
ReplyDeleteHard to pick a favorite but I'm going to say the first one!!
ReplyDeleteI'd say the third one.
ReplyDeleteThe third one would be my favourite as well :)
ReplyDeleteI cannot pick a favorite...I think they are all beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful lilies! My favorite is the first one. It is amazing to see all the details in the flowers when you look close. I have yellow lilies that is very old, they are from the time when my husbands grandparents lived here, maybe they are 100 years or more.
ReplyDeleteWonderful Lilies you have in your garden! With your help and your good care for them you will rescue them from the bad insect. I'm sorry, that you lost some of these beautiful speaking flowers.
ReplyDeleteI also have some problems with my hearing, often I must ask:What did you say? How is your hearing? Can you make quite good conversation with your family?
My favourite is the third one, but I love all.
My hearing is gradually getting worse. The grandchildren know that they have to look at me when they speak. That makes it easier it seems.
DeleteThank you for your answer. Respect to you and to your Grandchildren to see this problem completely natural.
DeleteYour daylilies are gorgeous. And your pictures are so good!
ReplyDeleteThey are all beautiful, I love day lilies and I don't have even one. {{sigh}} I had a lot of them where we previously lived and they were so pretty. I sure miss them. Hope all is well with you and your family.
ReplyDeleteI was reading this and it suddenly took me over to one of your old posts in February or something. So, I mentioned there that the purple lilies were my favorites. It will sound weird when you see it, lol.
ReplyDeleteSince I love all daylilies, I can't say I have a favorite....they are all beautiful. Do you remember the names of them? Is the 5th one called "Happy Returns"?
ReplyDeleteEllabie
It's either Happy Returns or Stella D'Oro. I would say it is the former. Somewhere I must have a plan of the yard with the names of the Day lilies.
DeleteI love lilies and any color! Which I had a yard full! Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteThat's a good one! You never know what the captions will tell you! I like the orange lily best. I don't usually like orange (like, in clothing - yuck!) but I love it in flowers.
ReplyDeleteLove the pretty pink one but the yellows are beautiful too! :)
