Pumpkins and Thanksgiving

It was my sweet  granddaughter Kate's birthday this past week. She gave ME a gift instead of the other way around.....this set of  three crocheted pumpkins with real sticks for stems. Aren't they cute?  (She ordered a set for herself too) .  I can't decide if I want to put them on the porch table or on the sideboard. They look fine in both spots.

That bedspread that I bought at the thrift store earlier this week is now on the porch swing and I am pleased with how it looks.

It's Canadian Thanksgiving this weekend and I'm going to be baking Pumpkin pies, of course. I have always made my pie dough using Tenderflake lard but I want to try using butter instead. I hope it will be as flaky as with lard. What do you use?

Teacup #14 is quite plain with a fancy border

Thanks for stopping by,  GM

  2. I always use Crisco shortening in my piecrusts and they've always turned out flaky and good.
I think your pumpkins are so cute both places too. Every year I say I'm going to make some but about this time I'm always overwhelmed with Christmas gift making. Mis-placing somewhere four pair of hand-knit socks that were destined to be Christmas gifts definitely didn't help at all.
That blanket looks as though it was made to be on your porch. Great thinking on your part when you saw it.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  6. Happy Thanksgiving GM :). All your pretties look so nice. I'm making an apple pie today, I use the recipe my MIL uses, and it works for me as I am pie crust challenged, if it aint broke don't fix it. I have used Lard in some cases to make pies, and that makes really good pies. Oh, the recipe I use calls for 3/4 cup vegatable oil.

  7. I like your new pumpkins.
Happy Thanksgiving. I love pumpkin pie.
I always used to make pie crust with just Crisco shortening. Then I started listening to "experts" and switched to butter. Now I use about 2/3 butter and 1/3 shortening.

  8. Love the bordered tea set.
And your crocheted pumpkin gift is perfect...great colors. I personally like 'em best with the bouquet of blossoms in the cup.

Happy Thanksgiving & have a piece of pie for me please!!

  9. I hope the pies came out good. The secret to flaky crust is that no matter the shortening, use ICE WATER. My mother and grandmother used this method back when ice was not a given thing! I love the crocheted pumpkins, especially those stems. LOVELY teacup, too!
