Reading and Baking

I finished reading The Kitchen Front. I thought it was predictable but interesting. It's about 4 very different women in an English village that enter a cooking competition during WWII. They had to create dishes using their rations and the book includes recipes from cookery books from that era.  Not that any sounded like something I'd like to try.

I've just begun the Wendell Berry book but no doubt it will be interesting.  Both these books are from the library.

I baked late yesterday afternoon. I baked the muffins in order to use up the last of  a jar of raspberry jam that had been in the fridge and the last third of a package of cream cheese that had also been waiting to be used up. I took a plain muffin recipe and made indents in the top of the muffins and put teaspoons of the jam and cream cheese in them topping them with a little dollop of the dough before I baked them. They are quite tasty.

This morning we had some rain and there wasn't much I could do outside. Perfect morning to go to the thrift store. I'll take pictures and show my little treasures next time.

Teacup #12 is Royal Albert  Lavender Rose pattern.

Cindy ( Creations by Cindy blog) asked how many teacups I have. I'm not sure but probably close to 200 so I have a lot left to feature.

Thanks for coming by,  GM

  5. Your baked bread and how you put the jelly and cream cheese in the muffins, looks and sounds delicious! I love all of the pretty tea cups you show in your posts. Do you keep them all in a cabinet or do you have them decorating throughout the house? They are lovely!

  11. Those muffins look delicious. I'm glad you told us how you made them as I may copy what you did someday. Love that pretty teacup. It looks a lot like some I saw in Dover this summer when we had tea.
Have a lovely Wednesday and I'm looking forward to seeing your Thrifty finds.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  12. After the second world-war German people were extremely poor, they did not have good food and so on. My mother and father had a small baby, my eldest sister now. An American soldier gave an orange-fruit to my mother. She gave he juice to the baby, and then made of the skin of the orange a cake - -

Fine books you get from the libary and fine muffins and breads you bake! A lot of hungry family-members, I believe - - :)

200 valuable teacups and surely with a lot of stories! Also the selfmade/handmade doily beneath the cup is valuable!

  13. I don't think my comment went through! I had such trouble with Blogger yesterday. WOW, 200 tea cups! As good as a museum display! Baking is so difficult for me. But you clearly have the knack. The rolls and the muffins look so good.

  14. Your muffin creations sound so good! I can imagine that the WWII ration recipes might be a little bland, ha ha! I've been wanting to read some Wendell Berry. I always like the quotes people mention. Enjoy your fall!

  16. I enjoy Wendell Berry's writing, and I haven't read the one you've shown. I had a complete set of Lavender Rose china - wedding gifts, mostly. I kept some of it, but gave the dinner plates and serving pieces to my sister-in-law who wanted more for her own set. It is a pretty pattern. Those muffins look delicious!
